365 Writing Prompt: Stranded

You are stranded in a foreign city for a day with no money and no friends, where do you go; what do you do?

If I am stranded in an unknown place with no money, friends, or a place to stay. I will go to a school, find the office of the principal. I will ask to see him/her.

Next I will tell him how I landed in this unknown place without any money or friends. I’d tell him my name, where I am from and will ask him if he’d lend me some money and book a room in a fairly decent hotel.

Again I am hoping the principal is a  respectable man, he’d help me. If I’m successful, I’d make arrangements with the hotel manager to  let me know the name of the company which  offers touring the city at a reasonable rate.

After the day is over, I’d thank all the people who helped me when I was stranded, especially the principal.

When I’m back at home, I’d send a thank you card to all the people who helped me. I’d also send a cheque to the principal to repay the money I borrowed from him.

365 Written Prompt: Cliche

Cliches become cliches for a reason.Tell us about the last time ‘A bird in the hand was worth two in the bush’ for you.

Years ago when I was new in the teaching profession I was promised a lot of things which were never meant to be fulfilled. I was in my early twenties, I took a job in a “Residential Model School” and I was told it was a step in the right direction.

Ten days after I joined the school, I was ready to quit. I found the principal too overbearing I felt I must leave this place immediately or I’ll forever hate the teaching profession. With this intention, I wrote a resignation letter and  took it to him, he looked at it and showed a puzzled look , “Is this a resignation letter he said.”

I nodded my head indicating yes, it is.

He then started cross examining me, “It’s only been ten days you’ve joined this school, what could have happened in such a short time?”

I did not have the guts to tell him, “You are the reason.”

Two years passed since that day, I was still teaching in the same school. I was looking for an opportunity to get out of that awful place. Luckily I saw an ad of opportunity to study in UK offered by the British council. I wrote my application and sent it directly to the office, indicating I had the intention of sending another one through the school, which was the usual procedure. My excuse I was afraid it may not make the deadline if I sent it through the school. My fear was the principal may delay sending it to reach it  on time.

The council was okay with this and when the application came through the school a few days later it didn’t matter.

The council phoned the school and told the principal I was selected for the interview and they already sent me a letter giving the time and place where I’d have to go for the interview.

About two months later I received a thick envelope by mail, informing me I was selected to study English as a foreign language in the Institute of education, university of London UK. I was overjoyed not only I’d finally leave this school but I will also get a chance to study in UK.

After this the principal came to me he wanted me to refuse the scholarship, he said, “Wait two more years, we will send you to UK for higher studies.”

I looked at him said nothing, in  my mind  the words, “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.”  was ringing loudly!

DP Daily Prompt: Proud

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

When was the last time someone told you they were proud of you.

As far as my memory goes I cannot remember someone saying , they were proud of me. Then again sometimes there are people who are proud of you but do not know how to express themselves.

I took the job of teaching in a new school. I was responsible for forty two boys, they were six years old, but were a group no one was able to control, in two months five teachers quit their job. I was told by a boy who was one of the pupils.

It was my first year teaching in a, “Residential School,” one day  the principal quietly came to see how I was doing on my first week in his school. He was surprised he didn’t have to come to the classroom to discipline these overactive boys, which was the case before I took the job.

My door was closed he signaled  me to come out, he didn’t care to look if the kids were in the classroom,he asked,”where are the boys?”

“In the classroom I said.”

He told me then, “you know everyday I have to come out from my office to make them quiet, how did you do it?”

Of course he did not say he was proud of me I was able to control the little rascals, I’m sure it was on his mind. Our superiors hold off praising us because they do not want to make us overconfident.

DP Daily Prompt: Not for Thee

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received that you wouldn’t give to anyone else? Why don’t you think it would apply to others?

The principal of my college once told me: you know what, you always write your exams too quickly, if you learn to take your time when you write them, your results will be much better.

I knew myself I had this bad habit, once I complete my exam I hate to reread it, I also write very fast, if I’m given three hours to complete my exam, I finish it in one hour.

I do not want to pass on the advice my principal gave me to someone else, they may not appreciate it or might think I’m acting like a know-it-all.

However I think my advice would only work for those who happen to be my students.

Writing Prompt:Cringe Worthy

Do you feel uncomfortable when you see someone else being embarrassed? What’s most likely to make you squirm?

My second year of teaching was absolutely horrible. The first day was enough to make me give up the wretched job immediately.

I remember we had assembled outdoors for some sort of activity, the Principal showed up and started being nasty to one of the teachers in the presence of the little kids. I was horrified, I watched the kids laughing. I made up my mind to quit right then and there. I thought if this guy is embarrassing this innocent teacher without thinking where he was, I’d be the last one to put up with this kind of behavior.

This attitude of the head of a school was enough to make me squirm.

DP Daily Prompt: First post by Ranu

My first job as a teacher was in my little hometown. I was warned by my Prof.,according to him it was a bad idea to be a school teacher. My big brother wanted me to teach in a college. My sister was the principal of the college.I knew it was not a good idea,my sister was bossy enough at home,to extend it at work, would be something I could not dream of doing.

I happily took a position in a local school. There were only a few kids in the school. The kids ranged from age five to fourteen. My first day was going well,at recess I noticed a five year old crying. I asked him what was wrong,he told me,he wants to go home. His Mom left him. I looked around and saw a a girl his age, running around playing with some other children.I stopped her,I asked, pointing to the boy,’will you play with him’.She was happy to oblige.Minutes later I found the two holding hands, happy and contented. Mom was forgotten in no time.

That same day I was called in to teach various kids in different grades. They liked me and I had fun teaching them.

Well I told myself, had I listened to big brother and took the college job,I’d be the one shedding tears,my bossy sister would make me forget the word teacher!

DP Daily Prompt:Third from the Top “Blogs I follow” post by Ranu

Personally I can hardly wait to start going through them. My friend gave me a variety of things  I can write about. As I was going through  them,it became harder to pick one out of the list. I narrowed it down to five.I liked all five of them.It was crunch time,I had to settle for one and forget the rest. In my mind I wondered, do I have to tell why I picked that particular one to write about?I know it’s the easiest I don’t have to think too hard,it is all about me.

After completing my degrees,I took a job to teach in my town.It was a brand new school, there were only three teachers, myself and two others. We were sailing along beautifully,I had taught for eleven months,I was in no hurry to change jobs. We had a few day’s holiday.During this time I went to see my friend from school in Dhaka. She told me I should leave my job and look for one in Dhaka.I could not warm up to the idea, simply because I did not have a place to live in Dhaka. You might be thinking,I can rent an apartment. This is where all the problem lies a young unmarried woman living alone in an apartment. Are you kidding me,the city is unsafe for a woman. Mini came up with the idea of applying for work in Residential Model School. It sounded reasonable but there was no Ad in the papers about a vacancy in that school. How can I apply, when they are not looking for a teacher. Mini’s next move was,’Do not worry,my sister-in-law is a teacher there, I’ll ask her to arrange an interview with the principal.’ It was all settled,I went to see the man,he was a Major. He was warm and friendly. Among other things his main fear was, what if she gets married immediately after she is hired. He took care of it by telling me, I cannot marry from five to seven years.

I took the job,I did not give him any assurance that I will not get married within the specific time mentioned by him. It is so difficult to know any one in only an hour. I wrote my resignation letter after ten days.I could not bear to see a principal humiliating the teachers in front of the students. My mind was made up,this atmosphere is not my cup of tea.Hence,’Chaman leave this place before it gets any worse.’ But then again I remembered the saying,’Man proposes,God disposes.’ I stayed in that institution for two more years and five days until I got Divine help.

PleaseNote: The third post is”Time To Be Inspired” and the third sentence is:’Personally I can hardly wait to start going through them.’
