Childhood memories of rain is fresh in my mind

How we jumped with joy for nature was so kind

In the sweltering heat

Our body loved  to greet

The  showers which cooled our body and mind!

…………………………

Mom was busy in the kitchen cooking khichree

And we were jumping with joy and saying,”Mom hurry

We are hungry we can’t wait

Let us bring our favorite plate

And fill it up with your delicious  khichree!”

……………………………

After dinner we had stories to tell

How sister Sally slipped and fell

Oh what a terrible  sight

Thank God she was  alright

It was one story Sally hated to tell!

Daily Prompt: Climate Control

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

The idea that the weather and people’s moods are connected is quite old. Do You agree? If yes how does the weather affect your mood?

I do agree the weather and the people’s moods are connected. On a bright sunny day , I see happy faces, the people move around and greet each other. The first thing  they’d say to their  friends or strangers is, “The weather is lovely , isn’t it!”

Weather always affects my mood, it ruins my enthusiasm to do anything, when it is raining or there is a blizzard. I’m always grumpy, I think I could have gone out if it was not raining or snowing. Actually I don’t always go out. It’s an excuse for me to stay home. I’d complain, ” see I cannot go out because of this terrible weather.

It’s my human characteristic, I blame the weather, but I refuse to say, “I’m lazy to go out.”

But I cannot let the weather off the hook either, continuous rain or snow makes me irritable, I dislike looking out the window when there is a snowstorm. The thought of huge piles of snow makes me worried, how will I clear the snow off the driveway, is  my  major concern. Then when the snow turns to ice,I’m terrified of going out because if I fall I’d break my leg or hurt my back. These thoughts take away my patience!

Daily Prompt: Community Service

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Your entire Community..however you define that;your hometown, your neighborhood, your family, your colleagues..is guaranteed to read your blog tomorrow. Write the post you’d like them all to see.

My post today is about people I met on my trip To Montreal. We bought the ticket in June to arrive in La Belle Province to watch Rogers Cup Tennis matches.

On the day of the quarter final matches, we went with high hopes that it would be great to watch live tennis. When we arrived at the stadium it was raining we were assured it will stop within the hour. It didn’t stop, the rain was heavier. After standing under the roof of one of the stalls, my daughter checked the tickets, she was happy to see we  were  allowed to go to the lounge until the weather clears up and the matches would start.

When we went inside the lounge, we found tables set up for four people. There were a lot of tables, where one or two people were sitting and the other two occupants were their bags. I looked at some of them but they conveniently looked the other day.

Finally I came to a place where a man was sitting, and there were three vacant chairs. By this time I was too tired to move on . I very gently asked if my daughter and I could sit down. He was nice enough to let us.It made me think why are people so selfish.

A few minutes later two young boys carrying food were looking for a place to sit I understood how frustrated they were not to find one. I called them and asked if they were looking for a table to sit. They were, but shy to ask, I told them the two chairs were vacant, they could sit. All the time they were there they kept thanking us. I wondered why the adults are not gracious enough to offer the vacant chairs occupied by their bags.

That was one scenario, next we were on a subway train, the compartment was full, there were no empty seats, a young boy stood up and offered his seat to me. I was delighted and thankful for his generosity.I thought may be the young lad was also visiting the big city and in his small  community people are more generous. So his offer to give me his seat was common and not really a big deal!

Blogging 101, Day Twelve: Increase your commenting confidence

Today’s task : Read six posts written in response to Monday’s prompt, ‘Brilliant Disguise’. and leave comments on at least two of them.

I was able to read two posts on Monday’s prompt.I liked all of them. I wrote my comment for both . Each one had a message which I enjoyed reading.

In Marie Griffith’s post , she quoted Judy Garland’s Quote: Always be a first rate version of yourself, instead of a second rate version of someone else.

Another post I truly agree with is the post by Crazy Canadian Saver: Why it’s pointless to keep up with Joneses.

Yesterday was a busy day for me. I had an appointment at 10:45 AM . It was a very cold day the temperature was 9 degrees Celsius and it was raining.

When I got out of my house I did not realize that on the 21st July it felt like Autumn.  I thought what happened did I sleep through the summer, it’s the only thing I could think of.

One lady looked at me and said, “Yes my darling it is July and the temperature is what you see on the billboard. You did not sleep through the summer, but you forgot it is St. John’s Newfoundland, it is famous for rain, drizzle, and fog.”

I thanked the lady for her humor. I came home three hours later, exhausted, could not concentrate on the work before me. I had to take a nap in the afternoon. My whole day was ruined, this morning I made up mind to complete day twelve assignment.

Writing 101 Day Fourteen: To Whom It May Concern

Today’s Prompt: Pick up the nearest book and flip to page 29.What’s the word that jumps off the page? Use this word as your springboard for inspiration.

Today’s twist: Write the post in the form of a letter.

Dear Mother,

It has been a while since I saw you and talked to you. I hope you are well, I wanted you to visit me to see where I live. The winters here are very cold, it’s the month of April, I still have to turn up the heat in the house.

Today the skies are overcast with prediction of rain in the forecast. It’s not the kind of rain we had back in Comilla.

You prayed for rain so we could cool off and sing Tagore’s song : Rain is falling drip drop, the road is overflowing. Here rain means cold, we cannot go out, there is a chance it may be slippery.

You cannot imagine what rain here is like esp. freezing rain, the branches of trees are covered with ice, if it continues too long, there is fear that we may lose power(electricity) and it will be dark all over.

We will have to wait for the power to come back ,to be able to warm up or cook food.

With the loss of power, we lose heat and the house is cold.

Here we do not pray for rain esp. freezing rain, we pray for it to stop.

I think I’ve painted a very dark image of rain, but we have learned to be patient.

I’d like to go and see you, there is one problem, it’s too far away. I get tired of sitting on the uncomfortable seats in the plane. They have increased the number of seats we are unable to stretch our legs. There is no room to walk on the aisles, they are too narrow.

Please give my love to everyone, and my special love is for you. All your life you worked so hard for us and now we can’t even come to see you and personally thank you for all the days you’ve spent taking care of us.

Love you Mom.

Your daughter,

Ranu

DP Daily Prompt: Think Global, Act Local

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

“Think Global.” Write a post connecting a global issue to a personal one.

There is a global concern about the change of climate due to global warming. Here at home our weather is very uncertain. There was a time when we knew how much snow we will have, I mean approximately. Now we have rain instead of snow, no I am  not complaining , I know I do not have to shovel rain yet I am concerned about this change.

How will this change of weather affect us, will it be detrimental to farmers who expect a certain kind of weather to grow food. If this happens food will be expensive, they already are and how much more can a family afford to pay for produce that they need daily!

DP Daily Prompt: Fourth Wall

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

You get to spend a day inside your favorite movie . Tell us which one it is— and what happens to you while you’re there?

My favorite movie is : My Fair Lady, starring Audrey Hepburn.

It was all about pronunciation of the English language, because I was in London to do a course in , “Teaching English as a foreign language, I thought the movie, “My Fair Lady” would be perfect to watch as it dealt with the pronunciation of the English language.

With this thought I went to watch the movie, I was amazed to know it was what I wanted, how the prof tried to teach the flower girl speak English properly.

I was thoroughly enjoying it, the prof was doing a brilliant job, I thought how wonderful it’d be if I was in it , I could watch them first hand, imagination is a wonderful thing ,I did just that put myself in the part of the movie where  learning of proper way of pronouncing the words was going on.

I was there trying to pronounce the words in my mind, I couldn’t understand why Eliza was having such a difficult time pronouncing : Rain, Spain, Plane? I realized after a while when one is used to speaking a language a certain way it is not easy to change one’s pronunciation.

Here is the clip where Eliza finally pronounced the words properly, while the professor his friend and Eliza were celebrating the accomplishment, I was watching their reaction and wondered why it took so long.

Sorry this is where Eliza finally speaks properly.

365 days Writing Prompt: Singin’ in the rain

Safe inside toasty warm ,while water pitter–patters on the roof—-describe your perfect, rainy afternoon.

Rainy afternoon is a day when we sit in our house and sing all our favorite songs  one of the songs is:

Rain is falling drip drop the sky is overcast, we’d sing Tagore’s song, sit in our cozy room and tell each other stories, sometimes scary, other times funny.

It’s a  perfect time for mom to prepare our most favorite dish called Khichree. It’s a mixture of rice and lentils served with fried spicy beef. It’s so delicious, it makes us wish to have rainy days more often.

DP Daily Prompt: Memory on the Menu

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

Which good memories are better–the recent and vivid ones, or those that time has covered in a sweet haze?

I like the memories that time has covered in a sweet haze. When I was very young, life seemed simple, I woke up early in the morning, according to mom sleeping late was a devilish habit. Did I understand what she meant, of course not, I knew it was something she disproved.

Rain or shine we were out the door when it was a week-end, we played to our hearts content, mom would call us to have lunch we’d gobble it in two seconds flat and back to the playground we’d go. It was as if inside the home was for sleeping.

My younger sister had some unbelievable imagination, she told me there were some little people growing in our garden, she takes them in the palm of her hand and has hours of fun playing, did I believe it,yes to me this was possible, I’d ask her to show me the little people somehow she managed to keep me in suspense.

My mind was flexible, I always believed every weird story I heard, it probably is a process of growing up.

During the monsoon season we’d run out jump and hop in the rain,if we were too wet we’d go inside change and back outside we went to get wet, giggle and run, then someone would sing Tagore’s famous song, “Rain is falling drip drop”, I’d join in and sang as loud as I could.

These are the memories I treasure, “Those were the days my friends we thought will never end.” They are so vivid seems it was only yesterday we did all those things, today’s memory cannot compete with the fun we had!

April Blog Challenge: Letter ‘U’

Rain is falling drip drop

Umbrella is what I need

So I do not get wet

Unnecessarily!

Unfortunately

The rain keeps falling

She is unable to go out

The thought makes her uneasy!

Unending rain

Is difficult to bear

Children screaming

Will expose you to unbearable pain!

Mold and mildew

Brought in by the

Unwelcome rain

Oh it is such a pain!
