365 Writing Prompt: Mirror,mirror

Finish this sentence:”Whenever I look in the mirror …..I

Whenever I look in the mirror I think now that our Ramadhan has started, I wonder If I’m losing some weight or gaining instead, no I shouldn’t gain I should lose. I’m fasting for eighteen hours, I don’t eat lunch or snack or any kind of sweets, It should help to lose weight.

Mirrors do not really help it shows one thing in the morning and another in the late afternoon, maybe I should rely on the weighing scale that will give me the true picture.

So mirror, mirror on the wall you do not give me a true picture at all!

DP Daily Prompt: Sleepy Time

pad2014-s.png (308×60) More and  more of us go to bed too late because of sleep procrastination. What are the nighttime rituals that keep you up before finally dozing off.

From my childhood I and my family went to bed early. We had a specific time to wake up in the morning,we had to get ready to go to our kind of work, my siblings and I were required to be ready by six am to catch the school bus, my Dad went to work at 8 am. My mom was up for her morning prayer which had to be completed before sun rise. After prayer she’d be in the kitchen to cook breakfast. My father was not interested in having the same breakfast daily. My mother was a good cook and prepared a different breakfast every day. Next she got ready to prepare lunch for my Dad and us.

Our habit of sleeping early stayed with us. I do not have problem with sleep procrastination. There are a few times I stay up longer than usual, these are days when we have company for dinner, other than that I maintain my habit of going to bed early.

My nighttime ritual is simple, these days the sun sets after 9 pm. This changes my routine slightly, I have to wait to complete my prayer after sun set. I still make sure I am in bed by 10:30 pm which is latest for me.

There will be a routine change for Ramadhan for a month, after that things will go back to normal as far as my sleep time is concerned!

365 days Writing Prompt: Green-eyed

Tell us about the last time you were really truly jealous of someone. Did you act on it? Did it hurt your relationship?

I can remember once my father told my mother to buy new clothes only for my big sister, this was for our yearly religious festival, you see we have two important ones ,one after Ramadhan and the other one two months ten days after the first one.

All of us kids would get new clothes for the first one, but the second one we’d have to wear the same clothes, which was fine by me, but here is the catch, my big sister was the only one who would get new clothes for the second one as well.

At age eight I felt something was weird about this arrangement, why was the first question I asked, mom said because your dad cannot afford to buy new clothes for everyone. I was a cheeky little kid this explanation did not bode well for me, so I put my foot down and said, “then she shouldn’t get new clothes either” .

At that age I only knew what is right and what is not, the word fair did not enter as one in my vocabulary. To make long story short I said, “if she gets new clothes, you must buy for me as well because I will not wear the old ones”.

Whether my mom and dad had any discussion I am not aware but I got new clothes as well.

My relationship with the big sister was never cordial, the idea of having a sister was a sore subject for my sister, she was ruling the Sabeth family as the one and only daughter among five brothers, my arrival was hated by her, she made it known every living moment. This relationship had a crack from the beginning which grew wider as the years went on.

Fasting Post by Ranu

Ramadan Mubarak Said

Ramadan Mubarak Said (Photo credit: jotunbani)

For a month once a year we have the month of fasting. This is the best medicine prescribed for Muslims all over the world. It gives us a chance to understand discipline. Waking up in the middle of the night to eat something, wait for an hour to do our morning prayer, makes us look at ourselves and think of all those unfortunate ones, who are dealing with it regularly that is deprived of food.

This is the time when we are required to be generous,be kind, refrain from lying ,cheating and read the Quran and follow the instructions given in it. I am not saying to do all these things only in the month of Ramadhan. We are supposed to do it throughout the year.

Maybe we do not think of these things daily. This month reminds us of our duties towards our fellow human beings. We all need discipline and this is a very unique way of learning it.

To all the people fasting ,”Ramadhan Mubarak”, may you have a very good month and also “Eid Mubarak” to everyone.
