365 writing Prompts: Helping hand

Tell us about the most surprising helping hand you’ve ever received.

Some prompts have a way of pulling together everything I’ve stored in my memory bank. Today’s prompt is asking me to think of all the good Samaritans I’ve met in my life’s journey.

One fine morning I looked out my  window and was disturbed to see the driveway, the patio, the steps leading to the patio were covered with thick snow.

It seemed mother nature had a great time covering the trees, its branches and the yard with its soft fluffy snow.First thing that hit me was how on earth will I shovel all this snow. For a moment I was lost in my thoughts, wondering what can be the best way of clearing nature’s gift. I may have dozed off for a fraction of a second when I woke up to find a young girl looking at me, I was embarrassed and instantly said, “Did you say something?”

“Yes Miss”, she said, “Do you remember me?”

I stared at her, tried to remember where I’d seen her, nothing came to mind. I had a fake smile on my face which anyone with a bit of brain would know I couldn’t really  recall who she was.

She saved me from further embarrassment by saying, “I’m Heather, Miss you taught me in grade four, don’t you remember?”

“Oh yes I do, and how are you?” I said.

Without waiting any longer she asked, “Can I help clear your driveway?”

This was something I never expected to hear.I was delirious, all I could say was, “It will be so nice!”

Across the street her friends, who were students of the university, renting my neighbor’s house were waiting for Heather, came along. There were seven of them, within an hour and a half my driveway was cleared of the twenty five cm of snow that fell overnight. I felt a mere thank you to these wonderful girls is not enough.

I bought a Turkey from the supermarket, roasted it, and prepared a salad. For dessert I baked a cake. I called them and when they carried all the food to the house, I was relieved I could return the favor!

DP Daily Prompt: Sparkling or Still

What’s your idea of a perfect day off: One during which you can quietly relax, doing nothing, or one with fun activity lined up after the other? Tell us how you’d spend your time.

My perfect day off is when the skies are blue, sun is shining brightly, no clouds in the sky to hit us with precipitation, especially snow.

Snow to me means no free time, either I have to go out with the shovel to clear the driveway or get someone to do the job, in both cases I cannot relax. When things are done by other people they tend to cheat, they fail to do a good job, so I see snow here and there and I get irritated, in such circumstances I need to go out and do what’s left undone.

I always hope there will be no snow on my off day to help me relax. My kind of relaxation is no playing activity but sit with a book to pass time reading and listening to my favorite songs. this is what is relaxing in my mind!

Writing Prompt: Turn,turn,turn

For many of us, winter is blooming into spring,or fall hardening into winter.Which season do you most look forward to?

After a long cold snowy winter, I look forward to summer. Summer is wonderful there is no snow to shovel,no danger of falling falling on the ice.Nature is lively, the trees are dressed in green, the lush green grass is a joy to behold.

Flowers awaken after the cold winter reminding us they are still there waiting to show their beauty to the world.

Summer brings joy to our city, fresh fruit fresh vegetables and happy faces, there is no comparison with our good old summer!

DP Daily prompt: Opposite Day Post by Ranu

I love reading poetry and memorizing some I love. To write one is really cannot be included amongst things I love to do.It clearly isn’t my forte. You can tell me to mow the lawn, shovel the snow, clean the house, cook food, take care of and teach children,I can do all these with relative ease. But write poetry.I’m happy to pass it on to Tagore,Shakespeare and all the rest of them. Not me,this is a burden I cannot carry easily. I’d have to be reincarnated as a poet, even that wouldn’t work.

Let me try,I’ll see what I can come up with.

I can mow the lawn, shovel the snow,

cook food,clean your yard,

teach children young and old,

I can do all these,I swear I can.

Please do not tell me to write poetry!

Poetry is for all those with imagination,

my brain hardly knows to think,

how can I think before I dip my pen in ink!

If one immaculate day,

my thought leads the way,

and dares to write a poem,

if you make up your mind to read,

I will ask ,’Oh God, did I succeed?’
