Daily Prompt : Simple

In response to daily Post’s one-word prompt : Simple

When we first moved to Comilla, Bangladesh, there was a very nice simple man, who visited us almost every day. He was my Mom’s uncle. He was very fond of my mom and would come everyday to know if he could help mom with anything. Mom however was glad to see him and they talked for long hours. His wife was aloof from her in-laws and wasn’t interested to visit us.

One day we were invited to supper at their house, but my eldest brother was requested to go to their place three hours before dinner time. My curious mind wanted to know why my brother should go that many hours before us. I asked my mom why the older brother has to go that early, she told me no one in that house can cook, which is why  my brother has to go early to do the cooking.

It didn’t make sense to me, my mom’s uncle had a wife and two older daughters, don’t they cook?

Mom said, ‘they don’t know how to cook.’

From a very young age I saw my mom cooking all sorts of tasty dishes , why is it her aunt older than her cannot cook?

Mom warned me, ‘You must not ask any questions when you go there!’

I did not open my mouth, at the same time felt, my mom’s uncle was such a sweet simple man, he was too afraid to ask his wife to cook.

365 Writing Prompt: No longer a mortal

You’ve imbibed a special potion that makes you immortal. Now that you’ve got forever what changes will you make in your life? how will you live differently , knowing you’ll always be around to be accountable for your actions?

When I think of immortal, I think of all the definitions of this word: living forever; not mortal; divine;likely or worthy to be famous for all time; a person of enduring fame.

I think I’d rather be mortal than live up to any of these definitions. I am comfortable with the life I’m living, any change from it will not be desirable for me.

The fact that I’ll be expected to live differently is not a favorable option. The idea of trying things that I have not done before will be a pain for me, and the idea I’ll always be around to be accountable for my actions is not appealing to me.

I think I’m doing all right,I’m a good person. I am not anxious to be famous, fame can be a difficult thing.Think about Princess Diana, she was famous, she never had her privacy, there were people always ready to take advantage of her in all sorts of ways, she eventually paid the price, she ┬ádied at a very young age.

My life is simple,I go where I want to, I visit my friends without being interrupted by outsiders. I am free,  to me this is the best way of living my life. I do not mind being mortal.

Far away in a small village there lived a little boy with his parents. He was a happy child. His parents noticed he had little or no strength to do anything. He could not play with boys his age. His mother was afraid to let him go out and play with the boys in the neighborhood.

His mother told him stories of angels and fairies. she told him one day a fairy will come to play with him and take him to fairyland where every thing will be simple,he will never be sick.In the land of fairies, they help each other with their magic   wand.Once they touch you with it you will feel well and never get sick again.

The boy fell asleep listening to Mom’s stories. He dreamed he was in fairy land, Each time he felt sick, a fairy would touch him with her wand. He was very happy,he did not have to take any medicine,a touch of the wand would cure him. he wanted to spend his life with the fairies.

There he met a kind gentle man who listened to him,and assured him he would take him to the leader of the fairies and request her to let him stay in fairy land.

Suddenly their cat meowed loud, the boy woke up.He found himself lying in his bed.He was so disappointed he called his mother. He said,”Mom you told me I’d be able to live with the fairies, why am I still here?”

The mother was devastated ,she had no answer for her son,she looked at him and said, “Every day I ask God to make you better,it has not happened yet.I try to take your mind away from the pain you are suffering, this is why I tell you these stories,so you only think of good things, like fairies angels, love and happiness. I am so sorry to disappoint you. In life you will face disappointments, things will not always go your way. Still I want you to be happy and try to ignore the pain by thinking of good and happy things”.

If I could switch blogs with any blogger for a week, I’d switch with Subhan Zein. He writes his poems so beautifully. He has a great talent for writing simple poems, that are very meaningful. His comments are wonderful,he seems to have a way with words. I will learn a thing or two, I think.

Then he has such a huge follower list. I won’t mind having them for a week. Who knows I might have them for keeps. Wouldn’t it be lovely!
