Writing 101, Day 3 : Sleep

Today’s Prompt: Sleep

Sleep and memory go hand in hand,

One without the other cannot be grand.

Our body and mind both need rest,

It’s important  for an impending test.

…………………………………………

As long as I sleep without distraction,

My memory is intact,without subtraction.

But there are nights I’m deprived of it,

When nature reminds me about that  gossip.

………………………………………

I toss and  turn and take  few deep breaths,

Hoping to forget about the innocent deaths.

I continue to struggle to go back to sleep,

The sound of the alarm makes me weep.

……………………………….

………………………………………:)

Daily Prompt: Obstacle Course

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Think of what you wanted to accomplish last week.Did you? What are the things that hold you back from doing everything you’d like to do?

I wasn’t able to work on a different theme, I could not make up my mind what would be the best, while I was thinking the time passed me by. I realized there are so many hours in a day, during these hours, I have prayers to take care of, cook food, eat , feed the felines, if there is a delay in their feeding time one of them looks me in the eye and tells me, I am forgetting my responsibility. He is very vocal about it.

The fact of the matter is there is only twenty-four hours in a day. I have to sneak in an hour for  entertainment, during this time I  watch two game shows,”Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy.”

When I subtract all the times for  my extra-curricular activities from  24 hours, I’m left with two measly hours which for me is not enough for blogging 101.

Did I forget to mention I also need to sleep or my brain will shut down? Oh my online course completely slipped my mind, this also takes some thought to answer one question out of four. I wonder how I took care of so many things when I was in school. In fact I had to answer six out of ten questions in my final exams in four hours, back then I didn’t even use up all my hours, I was able to answer six questions without any problem.

It’s not the same now, you can give me a week I’ll still  be dawdling. I think there are too many distractions these days, like my favorite tennis player Roger Federer is playing I have to watch seriously how he  is playing, I say a  little prayer for him to be successful, then there is my not so favorite one  I try to jinx him so he loses and the field is open for my favorite player, who I hope would take advantage of the situation.

All these extra activities of mine takes away time I do not have. I end up not getting my assignment done. Come to think of it. It sure is an ‘Obstacle Course.’

365 Writing Prompts: life, happy,sleep!

Scribble down the first ten words that come to mind.Pick three of them. There’s your post title. Now write.

and, poets, reality, be, gone, life, sleep, eat, gone, happy.

You may wonder why I chose the above three words to write my post. My feeling is they seem to connect with each other.

There are certain things important in life such as: happy and sleep. you cannot be happy, if you are unable to sleep, for your body it’s necessary , after the day’s hard work your body needs rest, sleep is the best way of getting rest.

A tired body cannot be happy. I know when I’m awake all night I’m a very unhappy person, I value my sleep too much.

When I was in the university, my room mate suggested I should not go to bed earlier than my classmates, they will do better in the exam than me. I took her advice and studied till 2:00 a.m before my exam next morning. I was sick in the exam hall, my mind was blank I couldn’t recall what I had studied that night. I thought I’d fail, I was worried, luckily I was able to calm down and finish my exam.

From then on I advised my room mate, not to give me anymore pointers how long I should study, I knew what I needed to do well, it was to have a good night’s sleep before the exam.

I believe in the phrase,” early to bed, early to rise makes a person, healthy and wealthy and wise.”

365 Writing Prompts: There’s no place like home

If you had the opportunity to live a nomadic life, would you do it? Do you need a home base? what makes a place “home” to you?

No, I wouldn’t like to live a nomadic life if I had the opportunity.

Moving constantly changing locations, switching from one place to another, finding a place to live frequently, not knowing where I’ll rest or take a nap when I needed is not a very comforting feeling.

There’ll be a constant hassle of finding a temporary place to live, what to cook or eat,who are the people close by, are they friendly or unfriendly. If they spoke a language I did not understand would further complicate my problem.

I need a home base, I’d like to know my neighbors and have a good relationship with them. There are emergencies in our lives, like sudden illness, some of the appliances don’t work, we can get someone to take care of it.

If I’m sick I can call the doctor’s office and get an appointment to see my family physician, in contrast a nomadic life does not offer these privileges.

A home to me is a place where I have a bed to sleep at night. A place I can relax, watch TV, write my prompts, play with my pets, read a book, there are all kinds of activities I can keep myself entertained with.

DP Daily Prompt: Sleepy Time

pad2014-s.png (308×60) More and  more of us go to bed too late because of sleep procrastination. What are the nighttime rituals that keep you up before finally dozing off.

From my childhood I and my family went to bed early. We had a specific time to wake up in the morning,we had to get ready to go to our kind of work, my siblings and I were required to be ready by six am to catch the school bus, my Dad went to work at 8 am. My mom was up for her morning prayer which had to be completed before sun rise. After prayer she’d be in the kitchen to cook breakfast. My father was not interested in having the same breakfast daily. My mother was a good cook and prepared a different breakfast every day. Next she got ready to prepare lunch for my Dad and us.

Our habit of sleeping early stayed with us. I do not have problem with sleep procrastination. There are a few times I stay up longer than usual, these are days when we have company for dinner, other than that I maintain my habit of going to bed early.

My nighttime ritual is simple, these days the sun sets after 9 pm. This changes my routine slightly, I have to wait to complete my prayer after sun set. I still make sure I am in bed by 10:30 pm which is latest for me.

There will be a routine change for Ramadhan for a month, after that things will go back to normal as far as my sleep time is concerned!

DP Daily Prompt: Trick Questions

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

A Pulitzer–Prize winning reporter is writing an in–depth piece–about you. What are the three questions you really hope she doesn’t ask you?

The three questions I really hope she wouldn’t ask me are: 1. Who is your favorite person?

2. If you had a choice where would you spend

your vacation?

3. How many strange people did you meet in

your life, who is the one person you liked?

Possible answers: My favorite person changes every second, you can understand why I want to avoid this question.

If I had a choice I’d stay home day and night, watch TV, read a book and catch up on my sleep.

The third question is better than the first two, I meet strange people all the time how can I say how many or if there is one who is my favorite.

The Pulitzer–Prize winning reporter will have to find someone else to answer her questions, I’m certainly not capable of helping her to win another Pulitzer–Prize!

Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam dedicated this song on Tagore’s death.

Let the exhausted (Robi) Tagore sleep.

Do not wake him up ,

by calling him

One who provided the light,

all his life,

let him sleep.

Do not wake him up.

Do not make him cry,

by crying .

Let the exhausted Robi sleep.

Let him sleep.

Tagore Song    Translation by Ranu

I will sing for you.

This is why you keep me awake.

O spoiler of sleep,

I will sing for you.

This is why you startle me by your call.

O distressed one,I will sing for you.

Darkness is enclosing,

the bird is back in its nest.

The boat is ashore,

only my heart cannot rest.

In the midst of my work,

you did not let my weeping stop.

After touching me and

filling my heart with sweetness,

you move away,

I know you watch my pain secretly.

O distressed one,

I will sing for you.

This post is specially for Akhtar Bhai, Khurram Bhai,Robert, Shaidi and all the others who continuously encourage me. Thank you.
