Ghazal: Singer Jagjit Singh,Translated by Ranu

Hindi Song

When I saw you ,

I thought life is sunshine,

And you are a thick shadow.

My heart once more expressed its desire,

Once again I told my heart,

Life is sunshine and you are a thick shadow.

If you leave I’ll think,

What did I lose?

What did I gain?

The song I can’t even hum,

Why did time sing such a song?

Life is sunshine,

you are a thick shadow.

When I hear the word song , it brings back memories of all the songs I heard, the singers who spent their life entertaining us. The music, the language, the rhythm, tune and so many other things.

Let me translate my favourite Hindi song: the title is ,Life

Life is a Mystery
What kind of mystery is this life?
sometimes it makes us laugh, sometimes it makes us cry,
Sometimes our mind follows the dreams without waking up
One day the traveller will go ahead of these dreams
The people who arranged this gathering,
were happy and sad
will quietly leave this world alone but where?

Bollywood Song; Duniya badal rahi hai, posted and translated by ranu

World is changing ,

do not waste time shedding tears.

Let your eye-lashes cover your tears.

My heart wants you to

transform your tears into flame

wash the scars of your heart

with rays of hope.

In this dark storm of sorrow,

light up the lamp of your mind.

Get rid of pessimism,

look forward to your morning

with hope.

It’s difficult to check my emotions,

when I watch your face.

erase the memory of your

ruined life,

change it into something positive,

O my friend,

it’s no use shedding tears!

song: Mohammed Rafi-singer,posted and translated by Ranu

No ocean can give solace to my heart,

I have no peace even when I am drunk.

I am human not a stone

how can I say sorrow

does not unnerve me.

yesterday all the travellers were with me,

Today there is no one to show me  the way.

Break the mirror of my life,

I’m unable to see anything on it!

Knowledge of religion

Is the cause of feuds

God created humans,

Man divided them into

Hindus and Muslims,

As long as a child

Is unaware of religion,

He will become a good human.

Knowledge of religion

among humans has

produced a divisive world

A newborn child cannot

be blamed as long as

he stays human

God created One universe,

Man divided it  into

Bharat and Iran

Faith does not teach hatred

It does not teach to crush the weak

A temple that has no Quran

cannot be a place of worship

A mosque without a Geeta,

Is not a place of worship

those who claim they are faithful

and pious are selling the country

They live in palaces,

they are infidels and looters

All you innocent children

you will teach humanity

to these liars and thugs!

……………………………………. 🙂

hindi song, posted and translated by ranu

Life is a puzzle!

What kind of riddle is life

Sometimes it makes us laugh

and at times it makes us sad.

Sometimes our heart is unaware

Of following our dreams

One day the traveller of dreams

will leave ahead of dreams to the unknown

Those who decorated the Fair

Did so after facing sorrow and happiness

These are humans who chose silence

This is how they leave to the unknown alone,

What Kind Of Riddle Is Life!

Tagore song, posted and translated by ranu

After many translations of Tagore’s songs and poems, I finally realize, it’s not enough that I am a Bengali, and can claim I understand his poems and his songs. There’s something missing in my translation. The fact that I’m not a Philosopher, therefore I am unable to create the philosophic angle of his song lyrics. Today I’ll make an attempt, hoping I truly comprehend what Tagore is telling us.

This song is in the form of a dialogue between nature and our feelings.

Cloud says, I shall go

Night says I am leaving

Ocean says the shore is found

I do not exist

Sorrow says I stay quiet

as a sign of his feet

I say I only want to give away

I want nothing more

Earth says you have the

welcome garland

Sky says you have

thousands of lights

Love says age after age

I stay awake for you

Death says I sail your life boat!

The question is who do you think

they are talking to?

song by hemanta posted and translated by ranu

One day I’ll disappear like the road

I will not come back like the river

Like the day my time will end

and I will never come back

Like the fallen leaves in the wind

my mind will build its nest

in a painful sky

I will disappear like the shadow

While leaving when the traveler

Looks back and thinks of the past

His heart breaks when he

thinks about the bygone days

when the light fades from my eyes

and my mind takes over

I feel this is the end

I will never come back

I came to this  world alone

and alone I must leave it

My happiness will end

It will never come back!

The poet is describing the wind storm in his song. The rhythm is unbelievable.

The wild wind is blowing

The world is spinning

It’s color is changing

from golden to green

Love is in the air,

some accept and return

Others throw it away

It’s a puzzle none can grasp

The unruly wind makes one cry

and forget

the ever-changing color goes

from black to white,

there is a sudden lull

before it restarts its fury

It’s a battle of life,

You’re brave if you win

A coward if you lose

It brings bad luck,

to a whole host of people

who lose everything.

Such is its pattern!

ra Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya
Main Prem Mein Sab Kuchh Haar Gayi, Bedard Zamaana Jeet Gaya
Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya
Kyon Kaali Badariya Chhayi Hai, Kyon Kali Kali Muskaayi Hai (2)
Meri Prem Kahani Khatam Hui, Mere Jeevan Ka Sangeet Gaya
Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya…..

Hooo Chhod Ke Jaane Waale Aa, Dil Tod Ke Jaane Waale Aa (2

Har Raat Meri Diwali Thi, Main Piya Ki Hone Waali Thi (2)
Iss Jeevan Ko Ab Aag Lage, Aag Lage
Iss Jeevan Ko Ab Aag Lage, Mujhe Chhod Ke Jeevan Meet Gaya
Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya
Main Prem Mein Sab Kuchh Haar Gayi, Bedard Zamaana Jeet Gaya
Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya
Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya
Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya!

nkhein Asuan Mein Dhoob Gayi, Dhoob Gayi
Aankhein Asuan Mein Dhoob Gayi, Hansne Ka Zamaana Beet Gaya
Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya…..

Har Raat Meri Diwali Thi, Main Piya Ki Hone Waali Thi (2)
Iss Jeevan Ko Ab Aag Lage, Aag Lage
Iss Jeevan Ko Ab Aag Lage, Mujhe Chhod Ke Jeevan Meet Gaya
Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya
Main Prem Mein Sab Kuchh Haar Gayi, Bedard Zamaana Jeet Gaya
Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya
Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya
Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya!

My sweet dreams have ended,

I lost my love, the cruel world won

Why is the sky covered with black clouds

What makes the flower buds smile,

My love story came to an end

With it my life’s song ended

I’m calling my sweet heart to

come back to me

Each night was a night of celebration

Thinking we will soon tie the knot

but my dreams did not materialise

I don’t care if my life ends now

I have lost my will to live

My eyes are filled  with tears forever

My laughing days are over,

My sweet dreams have ended

The cruel world won!
