Willie The Curious Kid( A Short Story)

There was a loud roar coming from a distant. A curious kid softly followed the sound. He went alone, no one bothered to find out, where was he going and why.

It seemed he was the one who heard this loud sound. Suddenly little Porcupine stopped him. ‘May I know where your little steps are taking you? Can I accompany you? I promise I’ll be quiet.’

To hear a black and white tiny animal talking to him, frightened him. He was shaking head to foot.

He said a little prayer his mother taught him in times of danger. Eyes closed, ‘he murmured please God get rid of this creature, for I’m afraid.’

Thinking his prayer was answered he slowly opened his eyes. Standing before him was a huge monster laughing so loud, it made the little boy shiver and cry.

The monster had pity on him he said, ‘little boy, what’s your name? I promise I won’t hurt you.’

Still shaking, he replied, ‘my name is Wilfred, but mom calls me Willy.’

The monster shook Willy’s hand and said, ‘delighted to meet you sir, I am the one and only, Gabriel.’

Willy was out of his wits, ‘he mused, Gabriel is an Angel, you do not look like him.’

‘Did you see an Angel?’ Was the reply.

‘No,’ said Willy. ‘But they aren’t scary looking like you.’

‘Really, did you know Angels have the power to transform themselves, as they please?’

‘I didn’t know.’ Willy replied.

Gabriel said, ‘Can you guess why I’m here?’

‘Of course I don’t know, how can I? I was trying to find out where the loud voice came from; all of a sudden a black and white creature stopped me. I said the prayer Mom taught me to say when I’m in danger. I closed my eyes and asked God to get rid of it. When I opened my eyes I found you. I think someone is telling me there is danger ahead, I must turn around and go home.’

‘WOW!’ said Gabriel, ‘you really are smart.’

‘Listen, Willie, carefully mark my words as I speak, alert your brain, tell it to absorb it. There are a few things I have in my mind to warn you of an impending danger. You are heading in the wrong direction. Sometimes curiosity is not a great feeling one must have. Especially you my young friend.’

Willy was greatly troubled by this news. He looked at this impersonator with much regret. He quietly complained to God, “why are you putting these obstacles on my path. All I wanted to know, where is the sound coming from, this knowledge will ease my mind that’s all. Please remove this wannabe Gabriel, and let me move on.”

‘You are so clever; Willy, you think I am not aware of your thoughts? I bet you’re pleading with God to remove me. Am I right?’

Willie by this time was exhausted and disappointed because he couldn’t accomplish what he set out to do, because of these two awful creatures.

He excused himself from the monster and decided to head for home. When he reached home waiting for him was his mother. She was so scared, she stood in front of him, like a statue, she lost her voice.

Willy called, ‘Mom, talk to me, please I will never go anywhere without telling you. I felt something dragging me to find out where the sound was coming from. I was stopped twice, first there was this tiny black and white animal. It wanted to go with me. Mom I said the prayer you taught me in times of danger, mom I did close my eyes, but when I opened them, I found a huge monster, he said he was Gabriel. I did not believe him, he is too ugly to be an Angel.’

The word Gabriel, did something to mom, she immediately spoke, ‘You saw Angel Gabriel, what did he say?’

I was too frightened to see this creature. I think I was rude. But mom he wasn’t an Angel, he only pretended to be one.

Several weeks passed, Willie and his mom were busy in their respective work, Willie in school, mom at home, doing her regular work, cleaning, shopping and preparing food for her darling child.

Days, months were passing, there was nothing to excite either mom or Willie. Winter was showing its wicked look, there were flurries off and on. It was a quiet morning, the sky looked too calm, was something about to strike them, but what, only snow, it comes each year there was no cause to worry?

But this particular morning it seemed nature was warning about something more serious than a regular snowfall. Willie asked, ‘Mom can I skip school today? I’m frightened to go to school. Mom only today, I promise I’ll try not to miss school in future.’

Before Mom could utter a word, the sky became abnormally white, the leafy trees started blowing, with it there was snow. Instead of falling softly on the ground it was crooked, the noise of the windstorm instantly hit the electric wires, everything was falling, houses were shaking. The neighbours called each other to know if they were all right.

This was the year’s first blizzard. No one seemed to be ready, the tires of vehicles were not changed to face the snow. As a result the motorists were slipping and sliding and were incapable to drive their beloved wheels.

It continued for two whole days, schools were closed, everything stopped running . The Mayor declared a state of emergency.

After this vicious storm, it was time to discover the loss the town suffered by the storm. It was huge, the councillors of the town had a meeting to discuss the steps they had to take to rebuild, the damaged buildings.

Willie’s Mom thanked him for not wanting to go to school, she feared to think what could have happened if she forced him to go to school. She believed her son had a sixth sense.

She thought about Willie meeting a strange animal and then an Angel in the guise of a monster. Both warned him to go no further, when he decided to follow the roaring sound.

She was sure her son has a silent protector. She felt she must try to keep him from following sounds, voice or anything else out of curiosity.

One day she said, ‘let’s have some heart to heart talk, Willie.’

Willie jumped at this strange idea. ‘When adults talk like that it means I’m important,’ thought Willie.

In the meantime mom cleared their family room. She moved some furniture from the other room. She was certain if she prepared a room which was comfortable with a few things that’ll attract her little boy’s attention he’ll co-operate and will be attentive.

Willie was thrilled, he had a hard time waiting to have this mysterious talk with mom. When school was over, he packed his bag, ready to fly home as soon as he could. His feet were moving so fast he tripped and fell on the road.

It was rush hour the citizens were zooming ahead, they were hungry and wanted to reach home and eat some food. No one stopped, they were busy driving as fast as their vehicles could take them home. While Willie lay on the road bleeding profusely. Several moments passed, instantly a large dark form raised its arms, stopped the traffic and demanded each motorist to help it carry the little boy to the closest hospital.

There were many humans who volunteered to come to their rescue. This unknown and unseen entity chose the most plain and simple clothed lady for rescuing the sweet little boy, you could hear him crying softly, ‘mom forgive me I was trying to come home, I promise I didn’t disobey you.’

‘All right said the good Samaritan, you must see the physician at the hospital, we don’t want to see young Willie is missing some parts.’

The lady was so surprised, she couldn’t help asking, ‘do you know this boy?’

‘O yes,’ was the reply, ‘he’s my old friend, who needs a saviour when he’s out of the house.’

They were in the hospital in less than five minutes. The stranger wondered how her car reached so soon. It’s not so fast any other time.

There was a mysterious atmosphere at the hospital, Willie was wheeled into the Operating Room. Dr. Sam was ready to see Willie, ‘how do they know him? Asked the lady who drove him there.

‘You may not know him, but Angel Gabriel knows.’

Dr. Sam carefully checked Willie’s body. There were little rashes and cuts here and there, but nothing major. Then why was he bleeding, the doctor wondered.

He rechecked the boy and found the big toe of the boy was cut badly. He stopped the bleeding and bandaged the toe.

‘You are ready to go home Willy, Dr. Sam announced.’

The lady volunteer and the good Samaritan took Willy home. Willie’s mom was found crying her heart out waiting for her son. When the doorbell rang she rushed to open the door.

Waiting outside was her son and two other people she did not know. Come in, she said with the most beautiful smile they ever witnessed. Angel Gabriel answered, ‘We brought your son safe and sound. It’s your duty to look after him.

Both magically disappeared. Mom and Willie sat on the comfortable furniture, breathed a sigh of relief and hugged each other.

Daily Prompt : Noise

In response to prompt : Noise

The terrible noise in the nearby room,

Gave me a sense  of impending doom.

I followed the sound to check it out,

To my dismay I watched  kids running about.

What’s the problem I asked, ‘shouting,’

‘There’s  no problem, we’re  just playing .’

‘Okay,’ is all I could muster,

‘Perhaps you mustn’t fluster!’

365 Writing Prompts: Feed your senses

Write down the first sight, sound, smell, and sensation you experienced on waking up today. Pick the one you’re most drawn to, and and write( For a bigger challenge, pick the one you’re least drawn to.)

The clock was showing 7.30 am which meant waking up time. I turned on the faucet, the sound of the water and the sensation I felt when I washed my face made me realize  I’ve got to turn on the hot water side slightly more to enable it to be a little warmer than lukewarm.

I went to the kitchen for breakfast, I wanted to have something different, porridge every day was too boring, I remembered my husband once remarked, “Ranu ,how can you have porridge day after day, aren’t you tired of it?”

Today I’m finally feeling, “enough of you porridge, I must let you stay in your package, so I can turn my attention to the smell of that wholesome loaf of bread which is inviting me to toast it and eat it.”

I’ll pick the sense of smell for now. It reminds me of all the extraordinary smells we’re greeted with every day. You walk past a restaurant, there is that smell of awesome desserts which seems to beckon me to go in and have that wonderful slice of carrot cake, which makes my  mouth water. Then I think of the calories each slice is loaded with I take two steps back, knowing well to consume so many calories is disastrous for my health and body, not to mention the clothes that won’t fit me.

So I keep myself away from that temptation and tell myself, “It’s not that tasty after all, the voice inside me murmurs, ‘Sour Grapes Hmm”!

Writing 101,day four-serially lost-part three

I enjoyed teaching in Gander. The kids were wonderful. Some of them visited Florida several times.

One day David brought a large shell for me from Florida. He was a shy boy, he quietly laid it on my desk.

His friend Jamie said, “Miss did you not notice David brought you a gift from Florida, put it on your ears you will hear the sound of the ocean.”

I did and thanked David profusely for his thoughtfulness and laid it on my desk.

Next day when I entered my classroom  the first thing I noticed, the shell was missing!

365 Writing Prompts: Non-regional diction

Write about whatever you’d like, but write using regional slang, your dialect or your accent.

This one is tough, since I have not learned to record my voice on this machine i.e my computer. I thought about this prompt all evening unfortunately came up with no solution.

It’s morning I haven’t figured out yet how I’m going to enunciate words without sound. My mind tells me to write a story of how I learned some of the languages I know.

My first language is my mother tongue Bengali, my mother always used dialectal Bengali which everyone thought did not sound like the original language.

My Dad spoke perfect Bengali, the language you read in books, between my Mom and my Dad there were no issues which one we the kids should speak.

We picked the dialect and not the proper Bengali my Dad spoke.

Moving on to my next language it was Urdu, the language our neighbors and my friends spoke, it came to us quite naturally, I do not recall having any difficulty speaking it. This one like other languages must have dialects too, but I wasn’t aware of it. I know the kind that sounds better, it has to be the one written in books.

My third language is English, I learned in school, in my earlier stages I learned it from a British teacher, she had the perfect British accent.

Change of school put me in a place where English was spoken with an Irish accent, we were taught by Irish nuns, so my pronunciation changed, I was always keen to learn to speak like the teacher. The British accent I believe changed to Irish.

To me I didn’t recognize the change because “ha:f was always that, there was no change.”

If the accent remained the same it would be superb but it took a hit when I had to change all the long a– sound to short to conform with the rest of the population in North America, the kids I taught thought I had a strange accent.

I pronounced ‘half’ like ‘man’, from then on kids had nothing to say about how I pronounced the words.

Lately I’m forced to change the spelling, whenever I spell ‘labour’ the Brit way, it is underlined in red, to make it easy I drop the ‘U’ reluctantly.

This is my story of how I learned the languages I know and the changes I had to make to avoid being called “Weird!”

365 Writing Prompt: Opposite Day

If you normally write non-fiction, post a photo. If you normally write fiction, write a poem.If you normally write poetry, draw a picture.

I’ve traveled far and wide

But never could I hide

My fear of people who sigh

Because I didn’t know why!

So I looked up in the sky

To get my answer

All I saw was a bunch of cloud

That made a sound so loud

It made me twirl round and round!

I met a man who claimed to have the answer

They sigh to refresh their breath he said

I didn’t believe it

But they all said, that is it!

I will never get my answer

So now I think I have no fear

Why should I care if they sigh

There could be a million reason why!

DP Daily Prompt:Strike a chord

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

Do you play an instrument? Is there a musical instrument whose sound you find particularly pleasing? Tell us a story about your experience or relationship with an instrument of your choice.

I love a few musical instruments, I wanted to learn to play  harmonium, when I was thirteen, my mom thought it was a bad idea, she was afraid I’d neglect my studies. Later on I did learn to play it, I wasn’t able to continue due to lack of time and pressure of studies.

My husband bought a piano for me to satisfy my desire to learn to play it. This time there was a lot of things I was involved with, I could not concentrate on learning to play it. I did continue off and on, now I find I spend more time writing and reading, and  I do not take time to practice the piano.

I love the sound of violin, I have watched this instrument played by various actors  in several movies. There is not much of a story to tell, except I love the way it sounds.

365 days Writing Prompt: The normal

Is being “normal”—whatever that means to you —- a good thing or a bad thing? Neither

To me normal means one is physically and mentally sound. I think if a person is normal it is an excellent thing. Think about the two brothers who bombed in the Boston Marathon, killing innocent people , they were not in the right frame of mind, had they been normal they would not have committed such a horrible crime.

When I think about normal the battle of Hydaspes River fought between Alexander and king Porus comes to mind. This battle was won by Alexander and King Porus was taken prisoner. Alexander asked Porus how he wished to be treated . “Treat me O Alexander , like a King” Porus responded. Alexander despite his victory asked the king how he should be treated, it shows Alexander was in his normal frame of mind or else he would have ordered him killed. Porus showed he was normal when he gave the appropriate reply.

I like it when everything is normal, the weather, peoples behavior, when I say normal weather,I mean we don’t have snow in July, snow in December is completely normal.

I visited a store once to look at some of the jewelry on display, I looked at some of them, when I wanted to know what else he had, he turned his back and walked away, this attitude clearly showed his behavior towards the customer was not normal, Would I go back to the store again, absolutely not. This is one of the examples of an abnormal behavior.

Being normal I think is a good thing !

The Mirror (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Mirror  Mirror what do I see. My bedroom laughing in glee! Why? I’ll tell you why. Perhaps she is thrilled to pieces for having a person like the gentle lady occupying the bedroom. The pictures are there, they are not moved around every three days. It’s occupant is not giving her a tough time changing the furniture every few seconds. She is peaceful.Which according to her is heaven on earth!

What’s more there are no intruders disturbing her tranquility. It’s when the good lady opens the doors of her closet, the screechy sound  hurts her ears. But the mirror rather see a room where there is movement every now and then, otherwise it might seem she is viewing a morgue. It is unacceptable. She is happy knowing the owner needs her services to comb her hair,to get dressed, and place all the paraphernalia in front of her.She is always glad to oblige!

It wasn’t liking  the presence of cats. The cats kept coming and going. They got more attention than the mirror. So one day she took matters in her hand. She decided enough is enough. She is going to have a talk with  this lone member in the room. As soon as she walked in the mirror made a crackling sound. Astonished the lady said,”What’s wrong with you, my dear Mirror?”  ” I’m  unhappy” she  said. “Why”? said the lady.  Mirror:”either you do away with your pets or I’m going to leave.”  Lady:”You know I cannot do that.”  Well then said the Mirror,”I’m going to make a quick exit”. Lady,” how can you make an exit, you are a mirror, and an inanimate object at that”. Mirror was furious,” You Watch what I can do”. Immediately it made a loud noise and broke into smithereens.Nothing was left except broken pieces. So this ends the story of the Mirror. The end was spectacular!
