Daily Prompt : Loop

In response to one-word prompt : Loop

Racers running around a one-mile loop,

Were anxiously thinking of the tasty soup,

When they came to the house,

They saw a large ugly mouse,

Eating the last drop of the tasty soup!

Daily Prompt: Ingredients

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

What’s the one item in your kitchen you can’t possibly cook without? A spice, your grandma’s measuring cup, instant ramen– what’s your magical ingredient, and why?

Let me think, what’s one item in my kitchen I can’t do without?

Is it a spice, I can’t consider it nice?

Grandma’s measuring cup ,

Grandma left before I showed up?

Then perhaps it is  ramen

No  they’re too curly I fear

What can it be what can it be ?

I pull my hair

And I grind my teeth,

Such an elusive item I haven’t really seen.

I run to the cook and ask his assistant,

They look at me and show me the door.

I make up my mind to go to my kitchen

I check and I check

But didn’t know what to  check

Suddenly  voices cried out

Are you looking for us?

I open the  cupboard what did I find?

Pieces  of pink and white salt smiling at me!

We  make your food tasty yes we  do

How can you forget all about us!

365 Writing Prompts: Fear no more

What is the thing you’re most scared to do? What would it take to get you to do it?

There are quite a few things I am afraid to do, one of them is cooking for a large number of people, I fear if the food is not tasty, there’ll be criticism coming from the invitees, this is one thing I fear the most. I do not take criticism lightly, it bothers me for a long time.

I have invited a large number of people for dinner a few times, it is the feeling whether they’ll like my cooking or not is one I find difficult to deal with.

DP Daily Prompt: Handmade Tales

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

Automation has made it possible to produce so many objects—from bread to shoes—without the intervention of hands(assuming that pressing a button doesn’t count). What things do you still prefer in their traditional, handmade version?

Automation has its place in our lives, we are living in an age when time is of utmost importance, some of us leave one job to go to  another, if that’s the case who has time to cook . This is when ready made food comes in handy. Assembly line products are welcome most of the time.

Having said that, I do like to cook food from scratch when time permits, no matter how easy it is to buy a TV dinner that we can stick in the microwave oven and within minutes we get a hot meal.

There is a certain charm of cooking  food by hand, for starters it won’t smell the same or will have the same flavor. After a while one gets tired of ready made food. I know I will. When I cook I have the privilege of making it spicy or use less spices according to how I feel that particular day.

While automation gives us freedom to do other things that require our immediate attention, when we cook food ourselves we make sure it is something tasty and not harmful for our well-being.

An Accidental Meeting

I was walking down the lane minding my business, suddenly I heard a loud screech, it brought me back to reality. I turned around to see who was making such an ugly noise, and there a few yards from me was a giant monster. He resembled Sasquatch. My heart was pounding fiercely thinking this creature would take me by my neck and kill me. I turned and kept running and breathing hard, fear  made me run faster without looking where I was going. There was a loud crash! I bumped into a trolley carrying fruits and vegetables. The contents went flying and I was hit by a flying potato . Before I opened my mouth,I heard  a shrill voice.

“Hey you stupid moron where do you think you’re  going so fast,Use your eyes, look what you’ve done, all my produce is scattered everywhere, it’s hundreds of dollars worth of fruits and vegetables I was going  to the market to sell.”

“I’m  sorry miss, I thought that giant beast would kill me.”

“What giant beast are you talking about, I don’t see anything here?”

“I swear I saw it,  it was only a few yards from me, I had to save myself, so I ran.”

“Are you hallucinating,  what kind of drugs are you on?” She said.

I never take drugs, why does she think I do,immediately I remembered  my friend Harry  gave me a cup of coffee ,I drank it and was on my way to see my aunt. As I was walking  I felt uneasy, I had no idea what was happening to me, I hope Harry didn’t intentionally add something in my coffee, could he, nah he wouldn’t, last time  he pulled a gruesome prank on his sister,he was grounded for a week . I told myself maybe the excitement to see Aunt Hilda after so long is the reason.

“Listen here buddy stop daydreaming and help me pick up whatever we can salvage,” she said.

“Okay, I really am sorry,  I am Kevin, what’s your name?”

“My name is Sangita, I live close-by, my Mom sent me to the market to sell these,How will I tell her more than half of the produce is ruined, come with me so you can tell her it’s your fault.”

I had no choice I agreed to go,I thought I’ll  apologize to her mom. She turned out to be an exceptionally kind lady, she wanted me to   have lunch with them, she cooked some delicious vegetables and served it with Naan. After lunch I thanked them before leaving and  promised  to see them soon.

Months passed after that incidence I forgot about Sangita and her mother.

I met them again in a shopping mall, where I went  to get something  for my  aunt. After checking in at the drug store, I bumped  into  the mother and daughter , I  made excuses why I didn’t visit, but my voice didn’t sound convincing enough, Sangita’s mother came to my aid, she said she understood kids like me have a million  things to do and he only met them once,it was too much to expect him to remember them.

Her sweet words made me feel guilty, I at once volunteered to go to their house. Sangita’s mom was happy, but her daughter was not. I went with them to their house, Sangita was  quiet I wanted to win her over and talked about my latest invention, the black hole. She was not interested.

An hour later Sangita’s Mom brought a tray full of samosas for me.  These tasty treats made my mouth water. I had an urge to grab the tray and start eating,I checked myself this was only my second day I should not be greedy.

Sangita sensed how eager I was to eat she brought the tray close I was about to take one but she turned around so fast the tray with the treats flew from her hand and struck her mother who was coming with a cup of tea, the cup with the hot tea fell on the floor, the broken pieces and the tea made a mess on  the floor her Mom slipped and fainted . I called the ambulance within minutes the paramedics came Sangita’s mother and I were on our way to the hospital.

Sangita sat on the floor. She waited for someone to tell her what to do next.

Writing Prompt: Seconds

I always loved spicy food. Once our whole family were invited to dinner to my parents friend’s house.  The lady whom we addressed as auntie was a very good cook. I was excited, I knew she makes everything tasty, we were looking forward to this dinner. When we got there our aunt told us her daughter-in-law cooked the meal. I was somewhat disappointed to know she was not the cook. Anyhow I was anxious to find out if she was as good as her mother-in-law or better.

Dinner was served, the main item was  “Seekh Kebab”( seekh is an Urdu word which means, skewer). The aroma of these kebabs were out of this world. Talk about spicy the lady was not skimpy as far as the spices were concerned. She was very generous with the most important spice ,cayenne powder.

Seekh Kebab is a dish where spices are important, too much or too little ruins the taste. Our hostess was a seasoned Chef , the kebab’s were so tasty, I still remember the taste after such a long time. They were served with Parathas( flat bread made with white flour and pan fried in ghee( clarified butter).

All we were interested in was the above two items. I cannot remember what else was there. We talked about this meal for days. We were invited again to have this meal,it wasn’t the same something was missing, maybe it was missing the love or our hostess wasn’t in a good mood.

DP Daily Prompt: You,the Sandwich Post by Ranu

Garam Masala-spice

Garam Masala-spice (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

If the restaurant were to name something after me,what can it be? I am thinking,it has to be something the customers would like to eat.I got it ,it will be Ranu’s bhoona gosht. It is a meat dish. The following is the recipe:

Ingredients:

2 pounds of blade roast—sliced into one inch pieces

5 small onions–chopped

4 cloves of garlic– chopped

one inch piece of ginger–chopped and blend into paste

1 table spoon– curry powder

half tsp. cayenne powder

1 tsp. coriander powder

half tsp. cumin powder

quarter tsp. cinnamon powder

1 tsp. garam masala  powder

half tsp. paprika powder

3 tblsp.  olive oil or canola oil

salt to taste

Method:

1.Wash the meat thoroughly, remove excess fat.

2. heat the oil in a sauce pan.

3. put the onion, ginger and garlic, fry it until the onion is transparent.

4. put all the spices and fry it for a minute,do not let it burn.

5. It should be cooked in medium heat.

6. put the meat and stir it . Cook it for five minutes.

7. Transfer the meat into an oven proof pot.

8. preheat the oven at 350 degrees.

9. place the meat in the oven, leave it to cook for an hour. You should check it every twenty minutes, do not let it burn. The finished meat dish will be dry. This is why it’s called ‘Bhoona Gosht’.

You can serve it with rice or chapati( something like tortilla)

If you follow it according to the instructions given it will be a very tasty dish. Your friends, provided they like spicy food will ask for the recipe. Keep it a secret, what do you think?

DP Daily Prompt: The Stat Connection post by Ranu

I have checked the stats page.I have noticed  there are three posts  listed frequently. One is a poem by Tagore, second is a recipe, and the third is a book review.

Tagore’s poem,’The rain is falling drip, drop, the river is overflowing,it is a very popular poem. During the monsoon season in Bengal, when everyone, especially the children are stuck in the house. This is one poem which is also a song is recited and sung by all. This helps them to come alive and happy. The weather doesn’t bother anyone. They are together, which doesn’t happen, when everyone is busy with their work. The poem brings back nostalgic memories of years gone by.

Keema Paratha is a recipe, there are a few steps to follow, if one is interested to make them. The pictures help,it gives an idea  what the finished product looks like.It is popular because they want to make them. The ingredients alone tells it is a tasty treat.

And The Mountains Echoed  a novel written by Khaled Hosseini. He is a great story writer. It is mostly about the people of Afghanistan. Their customs, what the wars are doing to the ordinary citizens’ daily life. Afghanistan happens to be in the news quite often. This would be one of the reasons people might like to read the book. The review helps to know what the story is about.
