Blogging 101,Day Four: Identify Your Audience

Today’s assignment: publish a post you’d like your ideal audience member to read, and include a new-to-you element in it.

Today I have chosen Rabindranath Tagore my favorite poet to write about. Tagore’s poems and song lyrics portrays everything from nature, to human misery, to happiness, he has covered it all.

I will write his poems and song lyrics which is all about nature. I am positive, he felt the same as William Wordsworth who wrote and I quote here: The world is too much with us ; late and soon, getting and spending , we lay waste our powers: Little we see in Nature that is ours; we have given our hearts away, a sordid boon.

Tagore loved Nature which is why he hated to study in an enclosed building. Humans should have the freedom to enjoy nature. With this in mind, he built the school named, Shanti Niketon(house of peace) here students studied outdoors, they had the freedom to move around.

Tagore loved children, he wrote song lyrics and poems with children on his mind. One reason could be he lost his mother when he was very young, this probably encouraged him to write poems about the interaction of a child with his/her mother.

I have known Tagore’s poems from a very early age, partly because the poet and I speak the same language i.e. Bengali ,I lived in Bengal, my parents were Bengalis. I am very fond of poetry and Music, Tagore’s work provided all of that.

Today I have embedded  a children’s song , the lyrics are written by Tagore. The subject is “Freedom”.

This is my translation:

Let us have freedom,do not hold us back

just like the birds in the woods that  fly around happily

Like the heavy rain, that falls without resistance

Like the  bondless  clouds and wind that move around in the skies

Like the dance of the firewood that encircles everything

Like the thunder that roars from the cloud

Like the roar of uncontrolled laughter where there is no barrier.

Let us have freedom, do not hold us back!

This is my day four assignment. I have tried to attract those adults who are children at heart as I am.

DP Daily Prompts: Sudden Shifts

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

You are at the beach with some friends and/ or family enjoying sun nibbling on some water melon. All of a sudden, within seconds, the weather shifts and hail starts descending from the sky. Write a post about what happens next.

Early morning on a Sunday My family and I planned to go out for a picnic,it was a lovely bright morning the sun was shining, there was a cool breeze blowing, it was as if nature was inviting us to get ready to leave the house , after all we barely have such a pleasant day.

We took votes to see where we should go, the result was in , majority voted for the beach. We packed a food basket with a variety of foods, we sliced the watermelon so we wouldn’t need a knife, I especially am never in favor of carrying a knife. We didn’t forget to take some napkins, eating watermelon slices is healthy but it is messy as well. We took large sheets and towels, to use for our trip.

We reached Sandy beach within an hour. We found the perfect spot, the kids were delighted, there was a lot of pushing and shoving as we were laying the sheets on the sand, it took a few minutes for the young ones to calm down. Once everything was in place we all decided to eat the watermelon first, it is messy to eat, the fact it was sliced we didn’t want to leave the slices in the basket too long.

We hardly picked up our slices of the juicy fruit when we noticed the sky was getting dark, we never gave it another thought and started to eat, I had only taken a bite when I saw a flash of lightning followed by roaring thunder. We were nervous it was unexpected, without wasting another minute I instructed everyone to gather our things, and make a move to get out and hit the road.

We had walked a few metres when suddenly large hailstones started falling from the sky, the kids were scared and so were we. We could not think how to get away fast to avoid the barrage of hailstones. I was glad we carried the sheets and towels, they came in handy to protect us from the onslaught. Slowly and carefully we walked to our car, it seemed as if it took us hours just to walk to get inside the car,the hail didn’t stop so we took refuge in our car and waited for  the weather to change. After an hour  though the weather changed and the sun shone again but we made up our mind to go home where the weather would not ruin our plans to have a great time!

Five sentence fiction: Rain

Lillie McFerrin Writes

The sky was overcast that morning, the three Harvey brothers decided to go fishing in a nearby lake , their mom told them to come home within the hour whether they caught fish or not.

Austin was more adventurous than his brothers Mark and Edward, he proposed to go further, he had heard from his friend there was a lake teeming with fish, he said, “Mom would be happy to see all the fish we’ll carry home.”

Mark and Edward were excited, so much fish in that lake, mom sure would be happy, all three were singing loudly, “Oh so much fish we’ll catch and eat them night and day, mama would be proud of us.”

They were barely a half a kilometre away when they heard a booming sound, not knowing what it was they moved on, another few feet onward, they saw the sky brightened up this time there was a flash of lightning followed by a roar of thunder, Austin kept going further, Edward and Mark were scared they froze and were unable to walk any further, within minutes it seemed nature was in fury, there were buckets of water falling from the sky, they were getting wet and couldn’t decide which way to go, Mark the brainy one ran towards home the brothers followed , they reached home all drenched, mom was not impressed to see them so wet, the boys learned their lesson they promised not to go fishing when the sky is overcast!

(Aagomon) Arrival by Tagore translation by ranu

(Aagomon)  Arrival               Rabindranath Tagore

The evening brought our work to an end__

our doors were shut we expected no one.

Some thought, there will be a visitor,

may be a king or a knight.

We roared in laughter and said no it’s not right.

2. Then we heard a knock on the door__

We then declared, ‘may be it’s the wind.’

The lamps were smothered we lay in bed__

some thought may be ‘it’s an emissary.’

We laughed and voiced, ‘it probably is the wind.’

3. At midnight we heard a strange tune__

drowsily we thought it was the thunder.

Every few moments we felt the earth was trembling___

some of us thought it was the ‘sound of the wheels.’

Still sleeping  we insisted,’it’s thunder.’

4. It was still dark, the sound of the kettle-drum was heard__

someone screamed, ‘,don’t delay wake up everyone.’

We held ourselves and woke up with fright__

some whispered in our ears, ‘we see the king’s image.’

We all woke up and expressed, ‘we cannot delay any longer.’

5. Where is the light,the garland,the preparation!

King is in my country ,where is the throne!

Alas our destiny, the embarrassment__ where is the assembly!

Some whisper in our ears,’this is a useless wail,

welcome him with an empty hand.’

O you all open the doors, blow the conch-shell___

in the middle of the night has come the king of dark homes.

the sound of thunder is heard in space, the lightning flashes,

pull everyone from bed and decorate the compound__

suddenly the king of sorrow has accompanied the storm.

Rainfall,A poem by Tagore—Translated by Ranu

English: az monsoon clouds

English: az monsoon clouds (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The poem rainfall by Tagore,is a very popular poem, recited in almost every home in  Bengal. At times I feel Tagore probably wrote this because it brought back nostalgic memories of his own childhood. The Monsoon season is awaited seriously because it gives relief from the extreme heat of summer.

The title of this poem is :’Rain Is Falling Drip Drop’

The sky is overcast, the day is coming to an end, the sun is about to set.

The layers of clouds are waiting patiently to catch a glimpse of the moon.

The bell in the temple is reminding , the devotees,it is time for prayer.

Over on the other side the falling rain is obscuring the trees.

Here on this side the colourful clouds are looking like hundred gems.

The breeze on this cloudy day reminds me of the childhood song___

Rain is falling drip drop, the river is overflowing.

The clouds surrounding the sky are playing different games, they have no boundaries___

They continue playing from country to country, no one forbids them.

Leaving precipitation in the gardens is a joy to behold,

It is amazing to see the the variety of games displayed by the clouds!

These games reminds me of the game of hide and seek we played in so many corners!

With it I think of the song ___

The rain is falling drip drop, the river is overflowing.

It brings my memory back about the light in my house,

my mother’s bright smile____

the sound of thunder and my palpitating heart.

The little boy sleeping on one side,

the trouble he gave Mom is hard to describe.

The over active boy jumping__

the loud thunder outside making everyone tremble.

Magically from a distance my Mom’s song___

Rain is falling drip drop the river is overflowing.

I recall my friends Shuorani and Duorani,

Also the angry Kankaboti’s pain.

The little flickering light in the corner of the house,

giving off black shadows all around the walls.

The sound from outside of the steady drop of water ting ting ting__

The wild boy listening to the story, absolutely quiet____

with it I remember my childhood song,

,The rain is falling drip drop the river is overflowing.

When did the rain fall, where was the flood___

Shiva Thakur’s marriage that was a long time ago!

Did the clouds display their merriment that day too!

Did  the thunder and lightning also pay a visit at intervals!

What happened to the groom after marrying the three women!

I don’t know in which side of which river,or in which country,

who sang the song, who did she put to sleep____

rain is falling drip drop, the river is overflowing.
