365 Writing prompts: Unknown Caller

You receive a call from an unexpected person. Who is it, and what is the conversation about? Go!

I lost touch with this person, so when she called, I could not recognize her voice. I guessed wrong.

The phone rings, ring… ring…I pick it up:

Me:    Hello

Unexpected person: Hello, Chaman, guess who?

Me: Is it Ateka?

Unexpected  person: No

Me: I don’t know, who is it?

Unexpected person: I’m Evie( she is excited)

Me: Evie? How did you get my number?(surprised)

Evie: I got it from Mrs. Abbas ( still excited)

Me:Oh Evie where are you? Are you living in Toronto?

Evie: No, I’m still in Whitby, in the same house, I have the same number.

Me: But Evie I called you once, someone picked it up and said, they’ve been living in that house, she never heard the name Evie. I thought perhaps you sold your house and moved to Toronto.

Evie:   No we didn’t sell the house. I wrote to you and my letter came back.

Me: I am so glad I found you. How did you get Mrs. Abbas’s number?

Evie : I asked Sr. Brenda, she gave me her number.

Me: Thank you Evie, I moved to St. John’s a few years ago.

Evie: Chaman I’ll call you again on Thursday.

Me: Thank you Evie, bye!

This was a real conversation between me and Evie. 🙂

365 Writing Prompts:Moment of clarity

Tell us about a time you’ve been trying to solve a knotty problem, a life problem, a big problem— and you had a moment of clarity when the solution appeared to you, as though you were struck by lightning.

One year I went to Toronto to see my cousin, one of my college friend found out I was in Toronto, she came to visit me in my cousin’s apartment. We had a nice visit it was fun talking about our college days.

Next day she called me and said she’d be coming to take me to her house, she lived in the suburbs.

Marcia wanted me to see her house, it was a two storied house, I noticed she was describing her house as if I was a buyer. I looked around the thought of buying her house did not strike me. I quietly listened to her and when it was time to leave I thanked Marcia and her husband for being so nice.

Next day Marcia called me again to visit her, I excused myself because I was leaving the next day.

I called her from my home, her husband answered the phone and told me his wife was too sick to answer the phone, I didn’t think anything and felt she is sick, maybe she’ll call me back when she’s better. When Marcia failed to call me and also did not send me a Christmas card,I thought about her house, how eager she was to show me her backyard, the bedrooms in the house, she also told me how good the neighbors were. Something clicked in my brain, maybe her intention was to sell the house to me, because I stayed quiet she suspected I won’t  buy her house.

It became clear Marcia’s eagerness to have me in her house was to somehow impress me to buy her house, when it didn’t happen, it was no longer useful to maintain her friendship with me!

DP Daily Prompts: Bad Signal

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

Someone’s left you a voice mail message, but all you can hear are the last words: “I’m sorry.” Who is it from, and what is this about?

I know, my friend Evelyn told me she knows where Aziz Fatima lives, Aziz will come to see her in Toronto, she’ll mention to her,Ranu is  looking for her.

It’s terrible I missed the most important part of the message, It’s useless to know she is sorry, why is she sorry, what happened did our mutual friend visit her, or she was unable to? These questions will be on my mind until I hear back from her.

365 Writing Prompts: Everything Changes

Walking down the street, you encounter a folded piece of paper on the sidewalk. You pick it up and read it and immediately, your life has changed. Describe this experience.

It was a summer morning, the weatherman predicted another hot and humid day, I was trying to think if I should go for a walk while it was cool or wait till late evening, my neighbor raised her hand from the other side of the street to see her.

I was about to cross the street when the wind blew a folded piece of paper on my feet, irritated I picked it up and noticed there was a message inside. I was torn, do I read what’s inside or dump it in the trash can? Knowing I’d always wonder what was inside I unfolded it and started reading it.

Wow I exclaimed I am invited to attend a party hosted by my favorite tennis player, Roger Federer , I was advised to pick up a package along with instructions from the nearby sports store.

I yelled out to my neighbor Gail, ” I’ll catch up with you later, I have to take care of something.”

I took the bus to the sports store and asked the salesman for the package waiting for me. The salesman was a very agreeable man, he handed me the package and stated, “have an enjoyable trip.”

I was stunned , “enjoyable trip” I mumbled , where am I going?

“You’ll see,” he said, he then  turned around to take care of a customer waiting for him.

Meanwhile I headed home, I must open this when I get home, I told myself.  Upon arriving home  I found Raphael and Gabriel  were  waiting for me, they were hungry and wanted food ASAP. I gave them their food and came to my bedroom. I was anxious to open the package. I slowly opened it and found tickets to fly to Zurich, next morning.

I packed my bag and left instructions for my neighbor to take care of the kittens while I was away with my house keys in her mailbox.

Early morning I boarded the flight to Toronto , from where I was to change to another flight to Zurich. I arrived at Zurich early afternoon. The flight attendant told me I would be received by Mr. and Mrs. Federer at the airport.

When the door of the aircraft opened, the flight attendant addressed me she asked me to go to the airport lounge and wait. I didn’t have to wait too long, I noticed some people were coming towards me, when they came closer I saw Mr. And Mrs. Federer with their children.

One of their daughters handed me a huge chocolate bar it was a gift to me from the kids. I was overwhelmed with the attention I got. There was more they invited me to accompany them to their home.

Their home was something that looked like one from the fairy tale. I was exhausted Mrs. Federer showed me the room where I’d take rest for a few hours.

Next day Federer had a tennis match against Stan Wawrinka another Swiss player. I was delighted I’d be able to watch both in action. The result was as I hoped, Federer won, we all wanted to celebrate his victory. Mirka Federer’s wife took us to a posh restaurant where we had a lavish dinner. The children were well-behaved they did not have any temper tantrums, Mrs. Federer I assumed trained them well for this day.

The week went fast they took me to all the important places in the city. I had a marvelous time. The week went faster than I wanted it too.

It was time for me to leave, they gave me a lot of gifts and also some cute toys for our kittens.

When I landed back in my city, I found my neighbor waiting for me. She wanted to know about my unbelievable trip!

DP Daily Prompt: But No Cigar

I always hoped my husband would move out of Newfoundland and settle in Ottawa,Toronto,or Montreal. It didn’t happen he kept putting it off.

We looked at houses in Ottawa, the prices were reasonable. My husband would always have a reason to say ,”No”. He liked Toronto better . His friend sent all sorts of pictures of houses on sale. He either did not like it or it is too expensive . I was disappointed but did not fuss too much.

Finally I accepted the fact, St. John’s was a city which had everything we needed. Besides big cities had too much crime on the go, pollution was a major concern . Here transportation is adequate for us our car or sometimes using the public transportation is okay where I live. There is no pollution here.

Things have worked out for me. I no longer have the desire to move into a big city. I wouldn’t like to be continuously stressed out. If I need something I can always go for a week and buy it. Life here is pleasant, comfortable and there are people who are friendly and always ready to help, should there be any need.

Since I came to Canada, I’ve traveled to Dhaka,Bangladesh many times. There were times when it took longer. It depends on the airlines. A few years ago, I took Qatar Airways. the fair was cheaper, this motivated me to use this particular airlines. It had stops in Frankfurt and Doha. The stop at Frankfurt was ten hours and Doha three hours.

I traveled by Air Canada to Toronto from St. John’s. My next flight was by the same airlines to Frankfurt. It took seven or eight hours to reach Frankfurt, from Frankfurt to Doha was six hours and from Doha to Dhaka five and a half hours. In all I flew for twenty-two hours to reach my destination. I did not count the hours I waited at each airport for the flights.

It took me more than two days to go to Dhaka.

Three years ago the farthest I traveled from home was Dhaka,Bangladesh. I took a flight from my home to Toronto,Canada. My next flight was Toronto to London,it took  seven and a half hours. We had to go through customs in London. From London it was back again on flight to leave for Bahrain. Our last flight was Bahrain to Dhaka. It took twenty-two and half hours in all,it was only flying time, I did not include the stops along the way.

When we landed in Dhaka,I was exhausted. I was impatient to go to my brother’s place for much needed rest.

It has been a long time since I was employed as;Alphie,Susan and Gepetto’s guide. We all had very pleasant trips. We learned a lot from this experience. Gepetto has written the names of all the places they visited. He is excited, he will be able to show all his collections. He will see his friends and he will know, who his teacher will be.

Alphie tells me he has acquired a lot of very important lessons.Something he wouldn’t have learned,if he hadn’t gone on the long trips. Visiting the mazars(holy places) was very educational. He liked visiting Nizamuddin Awliya’s mazaar. There were lots to see and a whole lot to learn. He also said,he liked his visit to Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti’s Dargah. This is the place that convinced him,  “A lie is a lie,he was thinking of the word,”Outwit.”  He felt guilty for deceiving his master. His plan to continue deceiving people was outrageous. It seemed as though he had a reawakening,he made up his mind to apologize to all those who were tricked by him.

The family’s itinerary was slightly changed. They took a flight from  Lahore to Karachi. They had few stops on the way. From Karachi they will land at Heathrow international airport. They will fly to Toronto and stay overnight. Hopefully they will reach Yellow Knife sometime this week. I spent a few very delightful weeks with the family.Susan reminded me to wish all our readers the best and to bid them goodbye and God bless on their behalf.

So, this is the temporary tour guide, Ranu ,wishing all our good friends Goodbye and God bless you!
