Daily Prompt: Safety First

Share the story of a time when you felt unsafe.

There are a lot of things that made me feel unsafe. I will relate one story here where I was extremely scared while traveling to Dhaka in Bangladesh, from my home town Comilla. I was traveling by train, it was three-thirty in the morning. There were other passengers with their family in the same compartment. I didn’t know them.

While the train was moving, a man suddenly showed up outside our compartment. He tried to open the door but couldn’t.

I was scared because of his looks,he had what is known as orafacial cleft . It’s a condition where the opening in the upper lift extends into the nose.It is due to tissues of the face not properly joined together during development. It is a type of a birth defect.

At that time I never knew why he looked like that ,  I was terrified. He remained standing outside our door in the moving train, I felt unsafe I thought he’d open the door and come in. I noticed the other passengers didn’t show any sign of fear.

I prayed continuously so he’d move away from our door. He did and I did not see him again.

Daily Prompt: Middle Seat

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

It turns out your neighbor on the plane/bus/train(or the person sitting at the next table at the coffee shop)is a very chatty tourist.Do you try to switch seats, go for a non-committal brief small talk, or make this person your new best friend?

Only recently I was traveling to Montreal with my daughter, my seat was in the middle, my daughter took the aisle seat, the occupant of the window seat hadn’t arrived yet. I was hoping it would stay vacant, squeezing herself in the aisle was the occupant, there was hardly any room for me to stand to let her in. I could only apologize and say, ” I’m Sorry, there is no room for me  to stand, can you hop on over?”

She seemed a delightful person, she replied, “yes I can.”

I thought she will say something, from the time she sat down which was two and a half hours, till the time the plane landed, she stayed quiet. Occasionally I saw her taking pictures of what she could see outside, which didn’t seem much.

I didn’t have to change my seat, I was happy I didn’t have to, the airline charges $30.00 dollars if the passengers want to change seats. I know because we had to pay that amount  they put us far away from each other, even though we bought the tickets at the same time, not separately, my daughter bought both the tickets.

DP Daily Prompts: In Good Faith

Describe a memory or encounter in which you considered your faith, religion, spirituality–or lack of–for the first time.

My mom gave me a book of prayers , she checked off two she said was very helpful when I was in any kind of danger. I memorized both of them and felt confident these two would protect me.

I once told my uncle about them, he smiled and said, “here is another one, this one is short and will come in handy when you are nervous and forget the long ones.”

I am equipped with my three prayers to help me when I need them.

Once I was traveling to Dhaka (Bangladesh) in the middle of the night by train, there were other passengers, I was traveling alone, suddenly I saw a weird looking man showing his face on the window, I was so terrified I started saying the three prayers one at a time, when the train stopped at a station, he was told to get off from the train by the conductor. I was relieved I wouldn’t have to see his face again.

365 Writing Prompts: Daring do

Tell us about the time you rescued someone else (person,or animal) from a dangerous situation. What happened? How did you prevail?

Our school was closed for Summer holidays, my Dad made arrangements to take us to Bangladesh, he had two reasons to visit the place, he’d be able to see his brothers and also for us to know our relatives, whom we had never seen.

We were excited to fly by airplane, it was our first time, and we’d meet our cousins, and aunts and uncles.

On the day of our journey, I had a lot of questions,my mother warned me not to be so inquisitive, besides she must have thought, it would be a brand new experience for us, she’d want us to have our experience of  exploring her home and make our own opinion. Perhaps she thought she might tell us things  she liked about it, may not be the same as far as we were  concerned. My older sister hated to join us, she couldn’t say no because my father would not have agreed to leave her home by herself. She was fussy and cranky, every time my Dad offered something to eat, she refused. I think Dad lost his patience and said, “Tui eli Kaino?” meaning why did you come?

We were having a grand time while big sis was being uncooperative. We reached Dacca safe and sound, took rickshaws to go to our uncles house. The uncle was my Dad’s youngest brother, he was pleased to see us. I wasn’t quite sure of the aunt, she was always criticizing us, one of her major disappointment was we didn’t learn to eat, by that she meant we did not eat enough, our parents spent money on expensive clothes never invested money on food. After a few days with our aunt we were ready to go to our grandparents home in the village.

This time we travelled by train, it was a long journey, we were kids enjoying every moment of it. When we arrived at Feni( name of the station) Dad told us we’d get off and hire two taxis to go to the village.

Our grandparents’ village was very attractive, every one except the servants were my mother’s relative. They all came in droves to see  us, as if were some kind of aliens from Mars, one asked the other, “Can they speak our language?”

My father felt proud, all his kids spoke fluent Bengali, that’s because it was the ground rule, we must know our mother tongue, he refused to let us turn out to be upstarts, this was the word he used.If I was unsure what the new word meant at that time, it did not take me long to comprehend.

The name of our village is “Cheora”, it is a very neat and clean village, all my mom’s relatives were good people always ready to help.

The best thing I liked about the village is the large pond of my grandparents, one day our cousin, Lily, my sister and I planned to jump in the pond, none of us knew how to swim, we were not scared, up to that time the word drown was not in our vocabulary, we stayed in the shallow end of the pond, suddenly Lily convinced my sister  to float  with her a few feet in the front, neither knew how deep the water was, both of them were having a whale of a time, then the worst happened my sister was drowning, none of us could swim, my mother happened to be there when she heard our screams she jumped to rescue my sister, she did not know how to swim either, she managed to grab my sister’s leg and pulled her towards her, my sister was fighting to get away she didn’t know mom was trying to save her, mom shook her and said, “Shelly it’s me your mom.”

When she heard mom, she stopped struggling. In the meantime the news spread like wild fire, Mr. Sabeth’s daughter has drowned, my Dad was frantic, he was blaming everyone in sight, it was their fault for letting these young girls go to the pond.

The end result of this incident was my Dad told us we were not allowed to go near or even look at the pond. One of my uncle’s claimed he  swam like a fish we should have called him. Had we waited for him it would have  turned out to be a tragedy.

The last few days we were in our grandparents village we were only allowed to walk on land and never in the water.

DP Daily Prompts: Middle Seat

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

It turns out that your neighbor on the plane/bus/train( or the person sitting at the next table at the coffee shop) is a very, very chatty tourist.Do you try to switch seats, go for a non-committal small talk, or make this person your new best friend?

On a plane sitting in the middle is very uncomfortable, the planes now a days have very little room to stretch your legs, so when I’m stuck in the middle it means I do not have the privilege of changing my seat, because no one wants to sit in the middle.

Then there is the problem of getting out of the middle because my neighbor finds it inconvenient to stand and let me go out of my seat, worst case scenario is when I come back the same passenger would have to get up to let me get to my middle seat. The inconvenience of sitting in the middle and a talkative neighbor on my side is something I try to avoid, I usually find a magazine and read the articles more than once to send a signal to my neighbor I am not in a mood to listen to whatever he/she is saying.

Since the neighbor is a stranger I won’t make small talk, I’ll probably watch the TV in front of me to let the neighbor know I am not friendly. I don’t think I’ll make friends with a completely unknown person.

DP Daily prompt: Elevator (fiction) post by ranu?’

CD Cover

CD Cover (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

It happened in Chicago. I went to do some shopping in  Marshall Fields. I was on the seventh floor and wanted to go to  the ground floor immediately.I thought if I take the escalator,it would take longer. I made up my mind to take the elevator. I pressed the down button.  I got the elevator within minutes. When the doors opened, I saw someone with his back turned towards me. I was happy to get on and go down fast to take the train .

The man turned around,I could not believe it, it was Willy Wonka! from ‘Charlie And The Chocolate Factory’. He was humming a weird tune.I looked the other way, suddenly he said, Mrs. you are very unfriendly, don’t you know I am Willy Wonka the owner of the greatest chocolate factory? I said ‘maybe, but I don’t care for chocolate’. He looked unhappy, soon he got a grin on his face,’but dear madam he yelled you haven’t tried my chocolate. Here is some eat it slowly and tell me, do you still dislike chocolate? I wanted to make him angry, ‘I said, this one is nothing special and I stand by my word,I do not like chocolate’. Willie was livid,he stamped his foot twirled around and extended his hand for something.Right that moment I uttered,’Mr. Wonka ,be careful, don’t jump the floor might swallow you’ ,then I broke out into an uncontrollable laughter.

Willy said ‘Do you mean I’ll have the same fate as Rumpelstiltskin ?’ ‘You’ve got it Mr. Wonka’. The elevator doors opened up,I looked at the weird fellow, said goodbye and ran to catch the train.
