365 Writing Prompt: All grown up

When was the first time you really felt like a grown up(if ever)?

I was always curious about everything. I think I was eight years old, my Dad hired a new teacher for my younger siblings, he was employed to teach them Urdu.

One day I wanted to see how my siblings were doing, there they were repeating every word that their teacher was saying, the teacher knew the whole book by heart. He had his eyes closed and in a sing song tone was reciting the words.

Something to me wasn’t right I thought, my siblings I didn’t believe could read, they were able to repeat what their teacher was saying. I waited for them to complete the lesson for that day, when they came out, I grabbed my sister I told her I didn’t think any of them could read, after continuous repetition they were able to deceive me by opening the book and pretended to know they can actually read.

I told my sister, “I bet you cannot read it.”

She insisted she can , I said: “then read.”

I opened a page in the book and asked her to read.

She said, “I want to start from the first page.”

I was convinced none of them learned to read.

I told her if she can read what difference does it make if I open the book at any page, she should be able to read. My sister stayed quiet, there was nothing she was able to say.

I went to Dad and told him the teacher does not know how to teach and my siblings after all these months cannot read a single word. They can read without opening the book. You know what that means they have memorized the whole book.

My Dad was upset, he immediately  fired the teacher .

That day onward I felt like a grown up I was able to point out to my Dad that the teacher he hired for our younger siblings was not capable of teaching!

365 Writing Prompts : Mad as a hatter

Tell us about the time you flew into a rage. What is it that made you so incredibly angry?

My mom loved collecting, attractive glasses and china. When I was in the university in Dhaka I found a crockery store, they had the most beautiful china and glasses.

I bought a few glasses and china for my mom from that store, my mom was so happy to see them ,I thought it was the best thing I did to put a smile on my mother’s face.

Mom had a china cabinet, she proudly put the china ware I gave her. I went back to school and planned to buy some more, mom would have a nice collection I felt.

When I went home to Comilla the first thing I noticed was my mom’s china cabinet was empty, I was disappointed I asked my mother about the china, she told me my good for nothing brother flew into a rage one day and broke every single piece I bought. He was angry because my mom could not give him the money to watch a movie.

I was upset, not only he broke my mother’s heart by breaking the china, he could not control his stupid temper, he broke everything he could, I’m telling you he is so useless, he did not study, he never worked and has this evil habit of watching movies and smoking, two awful habits, mom had to pay for or else his temper would rise to a maximum, I wish he left home and never came back!

DP Daily Prompt: Truth or Dare

I think it is possible to be too honest. My mother said ,  ‘you must never lie, unless your life is in danger.’  I try to follow it. I also think , honesty is the best policy.

Once the principal of my school asked me to find out, which teacher forgets to turn off the lights in the grade four area before she goes home for lunch.

I asked all the grade four teachers, they all said, they do not forget to turn off the lights, before they leave for lunch, the days they are on duty.

I suddenly realized I never turn off the lights before I left  for lunch whenever I was on duty. I also didn’t know this was the rule. I thought the custodian does that.

I went back and said, ‘Mr. Hancock all the teachers said they turn off the lights when they’re on duty.’

I knew I did not do it, I said, ‘Mr. Hancock I’m the only one who does not turn the lights off.’

He looked at me and said,’ No it’s not true.’

‘Yes it is,’  I said.

Mr. Hancock wasn’t upset, he could not believe I’d admit.
