DP Daily Prompt: Hello, Goldilocks!

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Write about a time you had a Goldilocks experience, exploring different choices and finally arriving at “just right.”

Yes I had a Goldilocks  experience in our food court in the mall. Once I went to one of the shops that claimed they were serving, ‘Mid eastern food,’ I wasn’t impressed it did not taste like anything, it was bland  and tasteless.

I then went to try out ‘Rice bowl’ they served too much rice, vegetables sliced too large and shrimps were too small, which was a disappointment.

I then   tried ‘Thai express’, it is a new one opened recently, they had different kinds of food, I chose chicken with noodles, there was a lot of rice noodles, very little chicken pieces, they said it was spicy, I didn’t think they have  any knowledge of using the right amount of spices. The mixture of variety of  spices made the dish tasteless.

Last week-end we went to the same, ‘Thai Express’ , this time I ordered rice with chicken, it was quite good. The chef did a better job this time, which can be because he gained more experience as this dish is ordered by more customers.

DP Daily Prompt: Food for the Soul

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Tell us about your favorite meal, either to eat or to prepare. does it just taste great or does it have other associations.

I have a few favorite meals, one of them is mashed potato, lentil soup and boiled rice.

At a very young age I developed a taste for very spicy foods. My mom’s preparation of mashed potatoes was the best. She sliced the onions thinly with it she mixed toasted hot red peppers which she squashed it with her fingers. Then she mixed the mashed potatoes with the onion, pepper and salt . The finished product was heavenly. The other dish she prepared was lentil soup and boiled rice, when these three dishes were served, I did not look for anything else.

Next favorite meal of mine is bhoona gosht or fried beef. The ingredients for this dish is boneless skinless blade roast. Whenever I call the butcher for this meat, he has it ready for me. The perfect blade roast which is so tasty. I slice the roast into bite size pieces, wash it and set I it aside, I slice three medium onions, two teaspoons ginger paste and two teaspoons garlic paste. I use a saucepan to fry the onions, ginger and garlic, when they are light brown, I add the spices, Cayenne ,coriander, cumin, turmeric, garam masala, salt, stir a minute or two, next I add the sliced beef , stir it till the spices are well coated with  the beef. I transfer the ingredients into an oven safe dish. Finally I place the dish in the preheated oven @ 350 degrees for an hour. I turn off the oven and leave the dish in, for the excess water to evaporate.

I serve it with boiled rice, a yoghurt salad and curried vegetables( frozen mixed will be perfect).

It reminds me of my mother’s cooking!

DP Daily Prompt: Sliced Bread

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

Most of us have  heard the saying ,”That’s the best thing since sliced bread!” What do you think is actually the best thing since sliced bread?

For me the best bread is the “naan bread.” They’ve been there for a long time. They are introduced in North america lately.

They are easy to make and delicious to eat. You can eat it with “kebabs” or vegetables, they can be eaten for lunch or supper or even breakfast.

I have posted the picture below.

WP Writing Challenge: Ice,Water,Steam

For this week’s writing challenge, take on the theme of H 20 .What does it mean to be the same thing, in different forms.

Ice,Water and steam:what it means to be the same thing in different forms.

I’ll start with “Ice” : It is useful in many ways, it helps to cool our drink on a hot day.It is a way to preserve food and keep them from spoiling, it also plays a part in some health adages such as chewing ice suggests you have some kind of nutritional deficiency which may be true.

Ice is also essential in hockey,i.e ice  hockey , during the winter there are numerous ice rinks where sports enthusiasts either practice their skating skills to get them fit for important games, or just skate for pleasure.

Ice skating is another sport where the skater learns to do jumps, double triple or quadruple to do well in competitions.

The second form according to my list is,”Water” : It is one of the most natural resources for all kinds of living things, it determines where people can live and also their quality of life.Despite the fact there is plenty of water on Earth, it is not always available when and where it’s needed. One must consider water as a finite resource which has limits and boundaries to its availability and suitability for use.

The next form is steam: Since fuel is consumed to heat water that becomes steam, the gas is valuable, it can be used for a variety of purposes.

Steaming is a great way to prepare vegetables, it is healthy because we do not need oil or any kind of fat to cook it. Unlike other cooking methods gentle heat helps vegetables keep more of their nutrients and flavor.

365 Writing Prompts: I was here

You are the first astronaut to arrive on a new uncharted planet.Write the note that  you leave to those who come after you.

Dear fellow astronauts,

Since I’ve landed here before any of you, I’d like to give some advice about this planet. The land here is mostly barren, very little plants grow here, I managed to find some inhabitants, who have found a way to grow produce which is healthy and delicious. I’ve told them to watch out for you and give as much help as is necessary, they are extremely friendly and hospitable, you will have a great time on this planet.

I think it is a good idea to carry some seeds of vegetables you like and try to sow the seeds , it’s an experiment which will help the future astronauts who are interested to visit this place.

I wish you well here.

My best wishes and good luck to all of you.

I hope this becomes true,me with unlimited funds to plan one day of luxuries I can’t afford. I’ll start by inviting my good neighbors to a scrumptious dinner, I’ll serve everything that they like such as meat, poultry, fish, all the vegetables available in the super market, several variety of desserts, tea, coffee and cold drinks. I will not serve hard liquor because it’s really not good for health.

After dinner I’d make sure everyone gets food to take with them. It would be a memorable day for me and the neighbors!

DP Daily Prompts: Mouths wide shut

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

Are you a picky eater? Share some of your food quirks with us( the more exotic the better)omnivores: What’s  the one thing you won’t eat?

I am not a picky eater, I am an omnivore I do eat meat and vegetables. There are certain flesh I do not eat, such as rabbit, frogs, pigeons and most flesh that are wild game, I get a peculiar smell which makes me nauseous.

Beef is my favorite flesh food, I cook it different ways, I always make sure it is spicy and hot.In my mind nothing can beat the taste of beef. I love it so much, once my brother looked at me and said, ‘ you like cow meat so much you’ll transform into a one.’

So far I still look like a human and therefore I feel I am not in any danger of looking like a cow.

Plant food i.e, vegetables? I like them all. I do have a favorite vegetable, okra, I can eat it every day I’ll never get tired of it.Second in line is Cauliflower, followed by egg plant, string beans, spinach, broccoli and every other vegetable on this planet.

I am an omnivore but do not like some flesh, I love all the vegetables!

DP Daily Prompt: Ring Of Fire

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

Do you love hot and spicy foods or do you avoid them for fear of what tomorrow might bring?

If I’m ever given a choice between spicy or bland food,my choice would be spicy, there is no doubt about it. I grew up in a family where any kind of meat, fish , or chicken was cooked with a lot of spices. I also ate green hot chillies with my food.  The chillies did not agree with my stomach but I did not stop eating them until I got sick. Every time I was sick I promised not to eat those green chillies, it was an addiction  I could not give up completely.

When I moved to Gander with my husband, there was no such thing as green chillies, the locals did not know them and it was not available. So my obsession with chillies came to a screeching halt. What was available in the store was black pepper and salt. I couldn’t imagine cooking with salt and pepper only, so we asked our friends in Montreal to send us some of the spices we use in our cooking.

This is how things worked out for us as far as cooking goes, there was no other issue, we took trips to the mainland each year and bought our supplies and clothing.

We moved to the capital within a few years, here we can buy anything we need, all kinds of fruits and vegetables and spices too.

The only food I eat without any spices is steak,to me it ruins the taste completely.

After a long cold snowy winter, I look forward to summer. Summer is wonderful there is no snow to shovel,no danger of falling falling on the ice.Nature is lively, the trees are dressed in green, the lush green grass is a joy to behold.

Flowers awaken after the cold winter reminding us they are still there waiting to show their beauty to the world.
