Biography of Pakistani actor: Waheed Murad written and posted by Ranu

Waheed Murad Was born on October 2nd , 1938. He died in November 1983. He was a Pakistani actor, producer and script writer.

He was the only child of Mr. And Mrs. Nisar Murad.

He studied in Marie Colaco Grammar school in Karachi. He received his Masters Degree in English literature from Karachi university.

He married Salma on September 17 1964. They had three children one died in infancy and the other two were daughter Aaliya and  son Aadil.

His father was a film distributor, at an early age he was exposed to film producers, actors and directors, which probably enabled him to choose his career when he grew up.

He produced a few films, one of them was Armaan. He had the main role in this movie. Armaan was a box office hit,it made him a super star overnight, so much so that he was compared with Bollywood greats e.g. Dilip Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand to name a few.

At heart he was a devoted citizen of his country, early on he felt the tension between East and West Pakistan. His movie Armaan, meaning hope was produced by him, his aim was to somehow stop the the split between East and West Pakistan, although  he was not successful, through this movie he managed to make a lasting impression on the minds of people both in Pakistan and Bangladesh.

He believed in the message of Iqbal which he used in some of his movies.

Mr. Shafique the facilitator of Iqbal studies online courses explained to his participants in the courses, the importance of Waheed Murad.

I personally admire the work of Mr.Shafique. Our latest title of our online course is, “Action”.

In my prompt yesterday, I chose my guests of whom I know more than others, one of them was Waheed Murad. One of my good friends Sonya wanted to know about him and the song in the movie, “Armaan”(Hope).

This song I thought was the highlight of the movie. This is  for you Sonya, if you hadn’t asked me I wouldn’t have written this so enjoy!

The song lyrics is in Urdu, posted and translated by Ranu

When I see two people in love

I wonder if they’d have the same fate as me

will their passionate love fail

I also had the occasion of someones head on my shoulder,

I remember the song she sang,

That song was my lifelong earning

Now in my confused state of love

I’m looking hard for that song

Those of you looking for shade you’ll beat your head

against the wall

Like me you’ll also  be called crazy in the city streets and lanes

I went out to look for happiness

I received only heartache and sighs!

The lyrics of this song is not the story of love as is normally defined, it is about two states that were united with love once but were split by misunderstanding  and push from outside source. The end result they now have a more firm bond of spiritual love which is what Iqbal had defined. It makes the two parts a whole,we learned this from Iqbal Studies how the parts become whole.

Thank you Mr. Shafique for your hard work. I finally understand you ,Iqbal and Waheed Murad how a part becomes a whole.

Thank you.

Ranu online course participant.

DP Daily Prompt: Seat Guru

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

You get to plan a dinner party for 4 –8 favorite writers/artists/musicians/other notable figures, whether dead or alive. Who do you seat next to whom in order to inspire the most fun evening?

This will be an interesting prompt for me to do. My guests are :Allama Iqbal,Jalal ud-din Rumi, Rabindranath Tagore, William Wordsworth, Hemant Kumar, Waheed Murad, Mohammad Rafi and Roger and Hammerstein.

Now the seating arrangement has to be special for my honorable guests.  I’ll put Allama Iqbal beside Rumi; Tagore and William Wordsworth would be comfortable beside each other;  Waheed Murad and Mohammad Rafi at his side will be awesome; Hemant Kumar the musician will fare well with Rodgers and Hammerstein the duo. Since all these are celebrities, I have decided to have catering service.

There is going to be some restrictions about food. I’ll ask for chicken and fish to be served, for beverage water is the best, it’ll keep everyone happy, for dessert I’ll order a few e.g cheese balls in syrup for Tagore and Hemant Kumar; Cheesecake for Wordsworth,Rodgers and Hammerstein; I’m hoping Waheed Murad,Rafi Iqbal and Rumi would love Persian dessert.

Dinner was a success, all the guests enjoyed the food served.  It’s time for tea or coffee, during this time the guests will be energized to speak to each other. There in the corner I can hear Rumi and Iqbal having a deep conversation,I quietly walked over, this is what Iqbal asked Rumi, “How could one make his journey towards immortality?”

This is what Rumi said, “It is like a  rebirth. Just as you arrive in this world through a birth, another birth takes you out of this world. However, this rebirth comes through the inner strength of Love. Remember, the essence of humanity is the power to see God: The body cannot hinder your flight once the power of true Love takes over the soul.”

I wanted to stay and continue to listen, but I am the host I must walk around and treat all my guests equally well. I went over to see if Tagore or Wordsworth needed anything, they didn’t even notice I was there, Wordsworth was explaining to Tagore what influenced him to write the poem “Daffodils”.

Suddenly I heard a heated dialogue between Waheed Murad and Rafi, they were discussing the song in Waheed Murad’s movie Armaan, Rafi was asking what exactly was the meaning of the song, my ears were ready to grasp the lyrics, Waheed explained it was not meant to be an ordinary love song, it talks about Love but in a different sense, between two states that were united once and split, but are trying to settle their difference spiritually. I couldn’t hear all of it.

Rodgers and Hammerstein called me, they were planning to play the music of “Edelweiss,” I was delighted I told them to go ahead, to my surprise the cast of the movie, ‘The Sound Of Music’, appeared and were ready to sing the song.

The dinner went well, they all enjoyed listening to the song. I had a great time!

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

Whether a person,a pet, an object, or a place, write about something or someone you connected with from the very first second.

I used to watch a lot of Bengali movies sometime ago, once they had an ad for a Pakistani movie, I never watched them I thought they didn’t have actors impressive enough, I still wanted to check it out. Well My feeling about Pakistani movies completely changed because of one actor.

His name was Waheed Murad, he was very different from the ones I watched I liked him the very first second I watched one of his movies. He was handsome, articulate and charismatic. I began watching his movies one at a time and have quite a collection.Overnight he became my most favorite actor.

I was actually amazed to know Pakistan film industry had such a talented actor, I read his biography and found out he was well educated, had an English degree in literature.

I read more about him than any other actor I know, sadly he died at age 45 in Karachi, years ago. I found him and his movies long after his death.

When I read the daily prompt,I wasn’t sure this was something I experienced, and can write about. On second thoughts I realized,I did encounter something which can be compared.

I was watching a Bengali movie, suddenly I saw an ad of a Pakistani movie. At that point I decided I will not watch it.I thought they are not so good. I am a very curious person,I had to check it. It was a trailer of a movie. The actor was Waheed Murad. I had no idea how good he was. I watched the movie. It was a pleasant surprise. I googled his name to know more about him. The information I got was encouraging. I started looking for his movies.I watched a number of them. Suddenly I was his number one fan.

While surfing the internet, I saw a piece written by someone. This was about Waheed Murad. I wondered if he was a fan of the actor too. I began reading all his articles, he was a writer and had written about a lot of famous people. Number one on his list was Allama Iqbal.I loved reading Iqbal’s poetry. I had no knowledge of him. Fortunately I found out, this person was giving on-line courses on Iqbal. I was ecstatic and inquired if I could join the course. I got a positive answer.I enrolled in the course. I have done a few and am more than satisfied. I learned about Iqbal. I feel I have accomplished something  because of my curious nature.

I am a regular participant of the on-line course. While I was reading about the courses I bumped into the world of blogging. I signed in to be a blogger .

My life has changed drastically. My curiosity introduced me to Waheed Murad. I am learning about Iqbal the famous Philosopher. I am blogging and learning more than I thought was possible. Such is life, one never knows what the future holds!
