365 Writing Prompts: Never Again

Have you ever gone to a new place or tried a new experience and thought to yourself,”I’m never doing that again!” Tell us about it.

I never regretted being in a new place, it was always a place where I could learn a lot from. The place was Montreal, Canada. I was lucky to find a friend instantly. She and I took long walks daily. It was August, sun shone every day, we were two friends enjoying the beauty of nature.

Then came November the skies looked cloudy and threatening, on one of those days I had the opportunity of witnessing a snowstorm, it was intense, I never saw snow before, how could I, I came from Dhaka, we have monsoon season but not snow. I was not prepared for it.

That day I was wearing sandals, sari and unaware that I’d be stuck in a storm, not rain but snow. I went to the bus stop to catch the bus home, but the buses stopped running , I called a cab, they refused because I lived in a part of the city where all kinds of transportation had to stop because it was too dangerous.

This was my introduction to snow, I heard in the winter time skating is the most popular sport. My husband took me to Mount Royal, he learned  to skate, to him ‘hey it’s easy you’ll learn it instantly all you need is a pair of skates, and a warm jacket and a pair of pants.”

I cannot recall what I thought of it, I certainly agreed to try, I kept falling down, every ten minutes I complained I was cold, I needed hot chocolate to warm me up. I don’t know how many cups of hot chocolate I consumed but I did not learn to skate.

Fast forward I was in a new place once again, this time I was a teacher in an elementary school. Here in the winter time the kids go  skating once a week, oh joy I thought to myself I couldn’t learn to skate in Montreal, what are the realistic chances of me learning it here, none, nada, but I tried. I finally accepted the fact  I’ll never learn this skill so it’s better to call it quits!

DP Daily Prompt: Set for Solstice

pad2014-s.png (308×60) Today’s summer solstice the longest day of the year(in the northern Hemisphere). How are you taking advantage of the extra hours of light this time of the year? Do you like it, or already miss earlier sunsets?

I do like extra hours of light, there are so many things we can do, go for a walk, enjoy the sun outdoors and warm days.

Shorter days means the  cold days and nights and the dreaded winter.

Where I live the days are too short, the sunsets at 4 pm which is too early, I really do not look forward to shorter days. It means winter is close, the snow, the cold windy days scares me. We have to put on extra layers of clothing to stay warm.

What I really like is temperate climate , not too cold in the winter and not too hot in the summer.

DP Daily Prompt: Climate Control

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

The idea that the weather and the people’s moods is connected is quite old.Do you agree? If yes, how does the weather affect your mood?

I agree the weather is connected with people’s moods. The past winter is proof of that, I remember when the snow started in December I thought, good it will end in February and we’d have a gorgeous spring and summer.

My calculation was wrong, the snow continued to fall beyond February, the days were too cold, the thought of snow and clearing it was a nightmare, then the town plow would show up like a giant monster blocking our driveway which we just finished clearing. When this happens everyday, it is impossible to be in a  good mood.

I know weather is responsible for our moods, good or bad!

Writing Prompt: Turn,turn,turn

For many of us, winter is blooming into spring,or fall hardening into winter.Which season do you most look forward to?

After a long cold snowy winter, I look forward to summer. Summer is wonderful there is no snow to shovel,no danger of falling falling on the ice.Nature is lively, the trees are dressed in green, the lush green grass is a joy to behold.

Flowers awaken after the cold winter reminding us they are still there waiting to show their beauty to the world.

Summer brings joy to our city, fresh fruit fresh vegetables and happy faces, there is no comparison with our good old summer!

DP Daily Prompt: Singing the Blues

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

We all feel down from time to time. How do you combat the blues? What’s one tip you can share with others that always helps to lift your spirits?

Lately I’m feeling blue about the weather, which continues to bother me. Our winter started I’d say from late November. Almost every day it snows, if there is one good day there’ll be several stormy days. I fear about losing power, which means everything will be at a standstill, to me no power means, no internet,no warm food, no bath, no heat nothing. I picture myself counting the hours and wondering when power will be restored.

Right now we are having a windstorm why Nature is so angry I cannot tell. Yes we are responsible, we have too many vehicles on the road polluting our skies, earth and what have you.

We have garbage thrown everywhere polluting the town or city we live in. We fail to realize we are the reason our weather has changed. One positive thing that came out of this is we are learning to recycle, which could have started a while ago,but it’s a good beginning.

When I am sad I listen to my favorite songs, I read my favorite book,I talk to my kittens, who probably wonder , “What’s wrong with her, she is too nice today?” Then there is the piano I play for a few seconds and stop because the last time I played was a long time ago,I seem to have forgotten a lot of it. My best way of lifting my spirits is to get my cook books and read the delicious recipes in there, I start my preparation, soon enough I forget what bothered me in the first place.

My one tip for someone who is having a bad day, would be to advise them to open a dessert cook book and read the recipes, pretend they are going to create that wonderful cheesecake they think about from time to time and imagine eating a slice of that wonderful creation and say to themselves, “Who says I am not a good cook, look what I have created,it’s delicious!”

Writing Prompt: Erasure

While I understand that my past was not so bad, I still think of the time we left Montreal for two years which turned out to be forever.I shouldn’t have encouraged my husband to leave the place. We thought we’d be back but circumstances were not favorable.what do I think when I look back, that probably it was not wise for us to move out.

I’d like to erase that decision because if I were still in Montreal, I’d be in constant contact with friends I met. Now I talk to them on the phone once or twice a month.

I wouldn’t have trouble visiting places like we do now. We are on an island and the  weather is a deterrent. Everything is expensive. The winters are long and harsh.Summer is short,we do not have the privilege of planting vegetables we like. These are some of the disadvantages.

We cannot have everything we’d  like, I  know that.

DP daily Prompt: Fright Night Ranu’s post

Fright Night

Fright Night (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I am afraid of so many things. I don’t know about others,I am terribly scared of flying. Where I live it’s almost the only way if I want to get out of the island. There is by road,if I want to drive for ten hours to get out of the island, then take the ferry to go across followed by more driving depending where I am planning to go. I have not overcome my fear of flying,I still fly and pray while we are taking off and landing, which according to my brother are the crucial moments.

I am also afraid when it is dark to be clear night time travelling.I had to do that too.

Where I live we have a lot of snow, sometimes when the temperature warms up and melts the snow and then freezes the ice on the drive way, street, pavement is dangerous.I have the fear of falling and breaking some part of my body. So far I have fallen a few times.

When I was teaching,it was known throughout my school,’Mrs.Asgar is afraid of ice’,I didn’t feel embarrassed when an eight year old who watched me walking ever so slowly, asked me if I needed help,I gladly took her hand and resumed walking little faster,I had help.

These are some of the things that frightens me. What helped  me was I got Divine help from above , and human help on earth!

fluffy snow

The sky is overcast today,

I wonder what will happen,

The temperature is dipping lower,

Does it mean we will have snow?

Snow in November is painful to bear,

It means it will stay on the ground,

Until spring comes around.

Let us get our shovels,

And all the other gear,

To make sure we are ready,

To handle the fluffy white stuff.

DP Daily Prompt: Six of one and half a Dozen of the other Post by Ranu

snowplough

snowplough (Photo credit: freefotouk)

I am sorry to see the long Summer days leaving us.

Now what will follow is something I shudder to think, ‘WINTER’.I can see cold hard winter days in my future. I’ll no longer see the lush green lawns, colorful flowers, birds of all variety adorning my patio.

It will be replaced by mountains of snow, slippery streets, bare trees, snowstorms, People clothed from head to foot in huge parkas to protect themselves from cold wind. We’ll be busy buying hat, coat, gloves and scarves. What is worse is the transportation, the cars will have to be equipped with winter tires.Driving will be a chore.

The most inconvenient thing we have to face is the snow plows dumping hard rock- like snow in front of our driveway. I’ll have to stay home most days,I am terrified of falling on the ice.

I wish I could convince ‘Summer’ to stay longer. It is something I cannot hope. Changing of seasons is a natural phenomenon. I will have to be satisfied thinking, ‘Summer’ will come again, I have to be patient!

DP Daily Prompt: Moment of Kindness Post by Ranu

English: Winter, 1962-63 - Snow clearance, top...

English: Winter, 1962-63 – Snow clearance, top of Ormerod House driveway On this day it took one whole day to clear the snow from the full length of the driveway (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

It was a few winters ago.We had knee-deep snow on our driveway.I got ready with my shovel to clear nature’s undue kindness.I came out and saw a girl walking in,’Hi,Mrs. Asgar’ she said,’Can I clear your driveway?’ I was taken aback, she knew I did not recognize her.She reminded me she was my former student. As I was chatting with her, five of her friends joined us,they cleared my driveway like professionals.

Not to be outdone I roasted a turkey with all the fix-ins and dessert for the girls.I knew they were university kids and  would like some home cooked meal.It was a pleasure cooking for these extremely thoughtful kids.

Only one girl knew me.The other girls were strangers. So I thought,’ Surely one good turn deserves another’.
