Why Do I Write

I write to improve my writing. I write to help my thought process flowing. My aim is to be able to write a story without thinking too much, what to write, but pick a topic and start writing, if I can successfully do it. I’d think I’m  improving my skills. I refuse to sit and think for an hour  about the topic at hand but to be able to write without any problems.

As I continue to write I want to  get the feeling, I have accomplished the skill. To me more I write better I feel, yes I agree I will make mistakes, I want to tell myself it’s a natural process which is why I must edit my writing.

Writing helps my brain to function properly, I do not want my brain to become rusty because I’m under using it. It also helps my memory to stay sharp.

Writing 101-Day 1 : I Write because…

Writing 101- Day 1: I Write Because……

I write because I enjoy writing. It helps me  write about things that is not always possible to carry on in a conversation.

I am not sure my friends or relatives would like me to talk in length what my thoughts are, some may show interest only half-heartedly ;others may tune me out; thinking what I’m saying is not interesting enough for them.

When I write I please myself, I do not have to think about anyone; it’s just my world and I get the luxury of putting my  thoughts in print. Some may read it , others may not. I write because it helps me to express myself.

I like to write about myself, who I am, why I’m writing, why do I have a blog. I have made friends through my writing.

Blogging has helped me  write about things I would not otherwise write.

I’m glad I decided to translate some of Tagore’s poems and his songs. I feel it is interesting for people who’ve heard about him, but are unable to know about his writings because of the language barrier. In a very small way I’ve tried to post some of his writing by translating them.

Daily Prompt: Barter system

pad2015-s1.png (308×60)

If the world worked on a barter system, how would you fare? Would you have services to barter? Would you be successful,or would you struggle?

If the world worked on a barter system, I think I’d do all right. I am a teacher, it will come in handy, I’d be able to barter my services for buying different things I need.

I believe teachers will do well, people need to be able to read and write and to speak correctly to be able to carry on their day to day living.

DP Daily Prompt: One at a Time

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

Today write a post about the topic of your choice— using only one syllable words.

Wait nice girl , I can give you one wish , what do you want?  I told June.

Can you give me a pen? she asked, I need it to write on my hand.

But why I said, your hand will not look clean.

June said: I do not have cash to buy a book, can you give me some? One day I will pay you back.

I gave her some coins to buy a book.

June bought the book, came back to show me.

How nice I said, now you can write in your book.

From that day on  June and I were best friends!

I just realized how difficult it is to use only one   syllable words.

365 Writing Prompts: Viral

The New York Times is going to feature your blog on its home page, and you have been asked to publish a new post—it’ll be the first thing tens and thousands of readers see.Writ it.

If I allow myself to believe I am capable of writing something which New York Times is going to feature in its home page, I have to be truly stupid.

I write and publish posts to improve my writing and please myself. who cares if no one thinks my writing is worth reading. Aspiration is something worthwhile to have, but if it gives one a sense of I’m the best, then that person should tell themselves you are a wannabe writer and you will not achieve this  kind of fame overnight.

I am contented with what I am doing,I will not try to blow my brains out to try something I am not capable of. This is my post  I’m not interested to go “Viral” but stay on this earth as a normal human being, until it’s time for me to leave!

Weekly writing challenge:A Lost Art

Tell us about a lost art: one that you know ,one that you miss, or one that should be lost for good.

In my first year of teaching I found among other books in language arts, they also  had a   speller. It had around thirty lessons, in each lesson there were twenty  words the kids had to learn how to spell , every Friday they were given a spelling test, most kids spelled all of them correctly, there were a few who did not.

Besides the spelling words there were words that sounded the same but the meaning was different e.g there, their, they’re; to,too, two, by,buy, bye and many others. There were sentences with fill in the blanks for kids, they had the similar sounding words, they were asked to fill in the right word.

There were words where the root words were given the children were required to add ed or ing to the root word.

The kids were encouraged to write stories or poems using the words they learned that week.

The book had everything which helped the kids to learn about capital letters ,periods, and so on.

I felt it was a wonderful way of encouraging the kids to write.

These spellers were used for kids from grades one to eight, they were numbered from book one to eight. The parents complained their child was having trouble learning to spell twenty words each week.

I thought learning  to spell twenty words in one week was not that much of a challenge, yet there were parents who constantly complained.

The Department of Education suddenly decided to take away the spellers from the course, this hasty decision back fired because the kids coming up the grades could not spell even the simple words.

I felt it was a wrong decision made by the school board and the department of education.

DP Daily Prompt: Snapshot Stories

Open the first photo album you can find –real or virtual, your call–and stop at the first picture of yourself you see there. Tell us the story of that photo.

This is a picture of me, it was taken by my friend, Evelyn Baptist, here I’m sitting on the grass, it is surrounded by some shrubs and plants, this is my residence in, Holy Cross College, Dhaka.

That day most of us were thinking of starting an autograph, where we could get our friends and teachers to write something and sign our names, Evie went a bit further she wanted me to wear a sari and get my picture taken to paste on the first page of my book. I agreed, if you see this picture, I’m really not sure if you can tell I was nervous in my sari,I feared the pleats may come off, and make me look like a fool.I always avoided wearing a sari, this day Evie was firm, she said, “you have to wear it.”

I must have borrowed the sari from one of the girls, I didn’t have any. I felt at ease with my Shalwar Kamiz.

This is what I wrote on the first page:

Dear friends,

Use your pen and brains

And do not let me ask in vain

When many years have passed away

And evening shadows round me play

Then shall this book of jest and truth

Recall the memories of my youth

Dear friends I once again invite

A few lines in my book to write.

Writing Prompt: Share the Love

Tell us about another blogger who has influenced your own online journey.

I started blogging with zero knowledge. I was lost and wasn’t quite sure I’d continue. Suddenly one blogger who is also a participant of the course I’m doing came up with a few suggestions: He encouraged me to translate Tagore’s poems, it’s because my native tongue is Bengali and Tagore’s work is written in the same language.

At first I was nervous, I thought it was a huge task for me, would I be able to do it. I accepted the task, but thought I might not be able to continue. I translated one at a time and he was very kind and generous, he read them and left his wonderful comments. I was encouraged and soon found it enjoyable.

He also asked me to write about some towns and cities in my homeland which I’ve done. He continued to read my work and left valuable comments which is the reason I’m still writing.

His name is Akhtar Waseem Dar, I am very grateful to him.

DP Daily Prompt: BFFS

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

When I think of “BFFS”, I see my mother in my mind’s eye. She has taught me a lot of lessons. I talk about them, think, and write whenever the opportunity presents itself.

One of the lessons she taught me and wanted me to follow strictly was never say anything bad about any one. If you don’t like someone whatever the reason may be strike those names off your head. Do not think about them at all. You can achieve a lot with your mind. read a book .Think of the characters. Write about them. Pick one you liked most. Write a short paragraph explaining ,what was special about him/her.

When you’ve done that. Write a book review, your review may or may not help your reader, but you’ve used your time well. You will forget about people who rub you the wrong way.

You can also help your siblings with their homework. They can certainly use it.

Keep your brain occupied with things that can help you and others.

When I’d listened to her, I’d think “what a neat way to occupy my brain.”
