Tagore Song: ay pauthay ami je, posted and translated by Ranu

I have traveled this path again and again,

Not a day have I forgotten.

Today its sign has disappeared,

Thick grass has taken its place.

In my mind I know, there is nothing to fear,

Favorable wind,blows unexpectedly-

A time will come when I will recognize you,

Because you know me.

The lamp I carried on my lonely walks

Has lost its flame.

Still my heart tells me

the stars have its address in their language.

On the side of the path the flowers that have blossomed

Will correct my mistake,

With their secret soft aroma merged in the sign.

Everything written in

the pages of my life is wrong

It is a mistake to think

Spring will show up

in my unfortunate life.

I ask myself where did I live,

where will I go?

I have no answer for it.

It’s wrong for me to think

in my cloudy life

there will be a ray of light .

No one will call me

when I attempt to leave

It is wrong to hope

anyone will remember me.

If I think I’m not alone any more

It will be a mistake.

Everything written in the pages

of my life is a mistake!

DP Daily Prompt: Break the Silence

pad2014-s.png (308×60)

When was the last time you really wanted(or needed) to say something, but kept quiet? Write a post about what you should’ve  said.

There are times when silence is golden, but other times it is necessary to speak or write depending on circumstances. I am caught in this dilemma lately, I know it’s always important to use caution, but it can help others who may wonder if the reply presented by someone is right or wrong. When we don’t correct the know it all’s you are wrong in this case they will go home with the assumption, ” I know I’m right otherwise someone would have said, I am wrong.”

Let’s say such a person exists, how do we say you are wrong and some part of your writing is irrelevant too. This is the kind of thing that annoys me, sadly I pretend there is nothing to be afraid of, it’s only a mistake!

DP Daily Prompt: Drawing Blank Post by Ranu

I seldom take part in any heated discussion. So drawing blank is irrelevant. However I did draw blank in my masters exam. Upon the advice of my roommate I stayed up till 2 a.m .in the morning of one of the exams.I was feeling sick,I did not have enough sleep. The invigilator handed me the question paper.I glanced from numbers 1 to 10. I was required to answer six of them. Well six, I could not understand any of them.

So I started to panic.I promised  that instant.I will never let anyone interfere with my regular sleep hours. The question was,I said to myself,’what I’ll do to that roommate for her bad advice ,is not the immediate issue, how will I deal with all these questions staring at me’,they were telling me, ‘answer six or else failure will be knocking your door’.

I pulled myself together, started reading the questions slowly, telling myself,’Ranu never mind the sleep, you were prepared to handle this, you have studied enough, now take a deep breath and concentrate’. I said a little prayer my Mom  taught me for emergencies. I started praying,I promised God I’ll never make such a foolish mistake again. It calmed me . I grabbed my pen and started writing. One by one my brain was spitting out the answers as if by magic. I finished the four hour exam in two hours.I did not want to review. I handed my answer sheets to the Prof. who had his sharp stinging eyes on me. ‘Are you finished, have you checked everything’?   ‘Yes Sir I have’ was my reply.

Unnecessary by R.Tagore translated by Ranu

Rabindranath  Tagore has in a very subtle way pointed out the things we do unnecessarily.

Standing inside the grassy forest on an empty bank of the river, I called and asked her,

Who are you walking on this deserted street covering a lamp with the corner of your sari?

The light in my house is not lit,

leave your lamp here Bala.

In the almost dark evening, she looked up at me with her two dark eyes for a moment

she said, ‘I will immerse the lamp in the river

this is why I am here at the end of the day.’

While standing in the  grassy forest,

I watched the lamp floating away without any justification.

Well into the evening when it started getting dark I called and asked her,

‘you lit all the lamps in your house who is the recipient of this lamp?

The lamp is not lit in my house,

leave your lamp here Bala!’

She looked at me for a moment as if by mistake;

she said,’ this lamp of mine

I will lift it towards heaven.’

I looked up and saw in the corner of the heavens

the lamp was burning for nothing.

On the last day of the dark fortnight I went to her and asked,

‘oh my dear where are you going with the lamp close to your chest?

the lamp is not lit in my house,

leave your lamp here Bala.’

In the dark she looked at me momentarily with her curious eyes  then;

she said,’I brought this light

I have to decorate it with the other lamps.’

I looked and saw, among thousands of lamps

her lamp was burning unnecessarily.
